EAGLES SWEEP PAIR FROM BLUE HOSE

CLINTON, S.C. – Carson-Newman College swept a pair of games from Presbyterian College 10-4 and 23-4 to open South Atlantic Conference play Saturday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. 

In game one, after the Blue Hose (5-15, 0-2 SAC) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a Kemper Booth (Hendersonville, NC) single, the Eagles (12-9, 2-0) took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the fifth on a home run by T.J. Graves (Cincinnati, OH). PC pulled within one with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Carson-Newman scored six runs over the next two innings to seal the victory.

Matt Teague (Belmont, NC) picked up the win for Carson-Newman, allowing only three runs on eight hits. Steve Cishek (East Falmouth, MA) picked up the save, throwing three and a third innings and allowing only one run, a homerun by Robert Rodebaugh (Marietta, GA).

Nathan Gravley (Cartersville, GA) led the Eagles with three hits, while Brandon Burchfield (Maryville, TN), Graves, and Kyle Beall (Baton Rouge, LA) all had two hits. Clay Belton (Ridgeway, SC) had three hits to lead the Blue Hose, while Rodebaugh, Lance Howard (Simpsonville, SC), Nick Hoffner (Ellicot City, MD), and Booth all finished with two hits.

In game two, PC took an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles took the lead in the top of the third on a grand slam by Brian Chapman (Tazewell, TN).

Carson-Newman took a 7-4 lead before scoring six runs in the sixth and ten more runs in the seventh to set the final margin.

John Wallace (Marietta, GA) picked up the win for the Eagles.

Gravley led the Eagles with three hits and five RBIs. Jonathan Mary (Maryville, TN) also had four hits and four RBIs for Carson-Newman. Belton, Rodebaugh, Matt Bodie (Aiken, SC), and Matt Sparrow (Lake City, SC) all had two hits for PC.

Both teams will be back in action tomorrow as they square off in the finale of the three-game series beginning at 1 pm.
