EAGLES
COMPLETE SWEEP OF BLUE HOSE
CLINTON,
S.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles completed a three-game
sweep over Presbyterian College in the opening weekend of
South Atlantic Conference baseball action, with a 7-3 victory
over the Blue Hose on Sunday afternoon at the PC Baseball
Complex.
PC (5-16,
0-3 SAC) jumped on the board in the bottom of the first when Clay
Belton (Ridgeway, SC) reached on an error, advanced to
third on an error and scored on a groundout by Evan Sowell
(Chesterfield, SC).
Carson-Newman
(13-9, 3-0) took the lead for good in the top of the fifth
with four runs on four hits.
Jonathan
Mary (Maryville, TN) and Jonathan McMahon
(Charlotte, NC) both singled to start the inning. Mary later
scored on an error. McMahon and Kyle Beall (Baton
Rouge, LA), who had reached on an error, then moved to second
and third on a sacrifice bunt. Nathan Gravley
(Cartersville, GA) then doubled down the left field line to
score McMahon and Beall. Brian Chapman (Tazewell, TN)
knocked in the final run of the inning with a single to left.
After the
Eagles scored a run in the top of the sixth, PC pulled within
two with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it was as
close as the Blue Hose could get.
Derrick
Calkin (Maryville, TN) picked up the win on the mound for
the Eagles, while Gavin Scroggins (Jefferson City, TN)
picked up the save.
McMahon led
Carson-Newman at the plate with three hits, while Gravley,
Chapman, and Nick Achberger (Anderson, SC) all finished
with two hits. Kemper Booth (Hendersonville, NC), Matt
Bodie (Aiken, SC), and Andrew Cockerham (Millers
Creek, NC) all had two hits for PC.
PC will be
back in action Tuesday as they travel to Gaffney, SC to take
on Limestone College in a 2:30 pm contest. Carson-Newman will
also be on the road Tuesday as they travel to Pfeiffer
University for a 2:00 pm game.
