Baseball: Presbyterian Wins Game, Takes Series 2-1

Mars Hill, NC – Nick Hoffner (Ellicot City, MD) hit a three-run homerun in the top of the ninth inning to lift Presbyterian College to a 9-6 victory over Mars Hill this afternoon at Henderson Field.  With the win PC won the three game series against the Lions, 2-1.  PC improved to 11-24 overall and 5-7 in the SAC.  MHC fell to 16-22 overall and 4-8 in the league.

PC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Jake Lunnen (Sylva, NC) singled to score Russell Robinson (Mt. Pleasant, SC).  MHC then took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when Joe Castagner (Bushnell, FL) singled down the right field line to score Chris O’Connor (Monrovia, MD) and then Matt Russell (Chapel Hill, NC) scored Lane Strobel (Walkersville, MD) on a fielder’s choice.

PC tied the game (2-2) in the fourth inning when Evan Sowell (Chesterfield, SC) advanced to the plate on a Lion error.  Chris Argano (Marietta, GA) then gave MHC a 3-2 advantage after he scored on a fielder’s choice by Brandon Seger (Mt. Juliet, TN).  The Lions went up 4-2 in the fifth inning after Argano singled to right-center to plate Russell.

PC took a 6-4 lead in the sixth inning scoring four runs on four hits and one Lion error.  Lance Howard (Simpsonville, SC) doubled to right field to drive in Robinson and Donald Sheppard (Sylvania, VA).  Lunnen then singled to left field to plate Robert Rodebaugh (Marietta, GA) and Howard.

MHC tied the game (6-6) in the eighth inning when Castagner single to left to score Seger and Russell singled through the left side to drive in O’Connor.  With one out in the top half of the ninth Hoffner hit a homerun over the left-center field fence to plate the game-winning run.

Hoffner went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a homerun to lead the Blue Hose at the plate.  Lunnen was 3-for-5 with three RBI.  Howard went 2-for-5 with two RBI, a double and a run scored.  Robert Cole (Savannah, GA) picked up the win (2-1) on the mound for PC in relief.

Castagner and Russell both went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI apiece.  Argano was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.  Both Seger and O’Connor were 2-for-5 on the day.  Seth Graham (Mooresville, NC) took the loss (1-2) on the hill in relief for MHC.

MHC will host Erskine College in a scheduled double-header on Tuesday at Henderson Field.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. PC will be back in action next Saturday as they host Newberry College in a 12:00 pm doubleheader.
