Hill, Presbyterian Split SAC Baseball Doubleheader
Mars
Hill, NC – The Lions’ baseball team split a SAC double
header with the visiting Blue Hose of Presbyterian College
this afternoon at Henderson Field.
The Lions won the first game 16-9 and then lost the
nightcap, 14-6. In
both games, the teams combined for 61 hits on the day.
Both teams are now 4-7 in league play.
MHC is 16-21 overall while PC is 11-23 on the season. Game
1: MHC 16, PC 9
In
the first game, MHC belted out 19 hits en route to a 16-9 SAC
victory. Chris
Argano (Marietta, GA) led the offensive attack going
5-for-5 with six RBI, a homerun, two doubles, and three runs
scored. PC
scored first in the contest as Donald
Sheppard (Sylvania, GA)
singled to plate Lance Howard
(Simpsonville, SC). The
Lions took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the first after Matt
Russell (Chapel Hill, NC) hit a solo homerun and Argano
singled to left field to drive in Chris Lambert
(Brevard, NC). PC
tied the contest 2-2 in the fourth inning after Sheppard
singled to right field to score Robert
Rodebaugh (Marietta, GA).
MHC then took the lead for good in the bottom half of
the fourth when Argano hit a three-run homerun over the center
field fence. Each
team scored single runs in the fifth and then the Lions
exploded for five runs in the seventh to take an 11-3
advantage. The
inning was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Jeff Mayo
(Enfield, CT). PC
recorded four more runs in the eighth inning on five hits to
cut the Lions lead to 11-7.
MHC answered in the bottom half of the eighth scoring
five more runs to increase their lead 16-7.
Brandon Seger (Mt. Juliet, TN) hit a two-RBI
double in the inning. PC
added their final two runs in the top of the ninth inning
after Jake Lunnen (Sylva,
NC) hit a two-run homerun to center. Following
Argano’s performance was Mayo who went 3-for-4 with two RBI
and three runs scored. Seger
went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a double and four runs scored.
Lane Strobel (Walkersville, MD) was 3-for-6 with
an RBI. Gary
Lee (Chesapeake, VA) picked up his fifth win (5-2) on the
mound for the Lions pitching eight complete innings. Sheppard
led PC going 3-for-5 with three RBI.
Howard was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Rodebaugh was 2-for-4 with a homerun and two runs scored.
Ryan Ariail (Elgin,
SC) took the loss (0-5) on the mound for the Blue Hose
throwing 6.2 innings. Game
2: PC 14, MHC 6
In
the second game, PC jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first
three innings of play and never looked back.
The Blue Hose scored two runs in the first inning after
Howard hit a two-run homerun to center field and then scored
two more runs in the second after Evan
Sowell (Chesterfield, SC) scored Matt
Bodie (Aiken, SC) on a fielder’s choice.
Russell
Robinson (Mt. Pleasant, SC) then advanced home on a
Lion error. PC
then added four runs in the third inning on four hits and one
Lion error. The
inning was highlighted by a two-RBI double from Lunnen.
MHC got on the board in the bottom half of the third
after Strobel hit a three-run blast over the left-center field
fence. PC
then went up 12-3 scoring a pair of runs in both the fourth
and fifth innings. MHC
added a single run (12-4) in the bottom of the fifth inning
when Jeff Rocket (Mint Hill, NC) singled to right to plate
Strobel. PC added
a single run (13-4) in the sixth before the Lions scored two
runs (13-6) in the bottom half of that inning on three hits.
PC added an insurance run in the seventh when Jim
Wagers (Blackstock, SC) hit a solo homerun. Lunnen
led PC at the plate going 3-for-4 with 5 RBI, a homerun, two
doubles and two runs scored.
Howard went 3-for-3 with a homerun, two RBI and a pair
of doubles. Robinson
went 3-for-5 with an RBI, a double and a run scored. Zach Matthews (Batesburg,
SC) threw 4.1 innings scattering seven hits to pick up his
second win (2-4) on the year. Strobel
led MHC in game two going 2-for-3 with three RBI, a homerun, a
double, and three runs scored.
Rocket came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Argano went 2-for-4 in game two.
Calvin Teague (Taylorsville, NC) took the loss
(3-3) for the Lions on the mound. The
teams will meet tomorrow to complete the three-game SAC
series. First
pitch is set for 12 p.m. |
