INNINGS LIFTS BLUE HOSE TO SWEEP
CLINTON,
S.C. – Presbyterian College scored runs in the bottom of
the sixth inning of both
games to take the lead and wrap up a doubleheader sweep over
Molloy College on Friday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex.
The Blue Hose won the first game 5-4 and the second 4-2. After
spotting Molloy (0-2) a two-run lead in the top of the sixth,
PC (5-13) scored four runs on two hits to take the lead. Clay
Belton (Ridgeway, SC) reached on an error to lead off
the inning and went to second on a fielder’s choice,
sacrifice bunt by Andrew
Cockerham (Millers Creek, NC). Robert
Rodebaugh (Marietta, GA) then reached on a bunt single
to load the bases. Lance Howard
(Simpsonville, SC) then stepped up a ripped a bases clearing
double to left center to give the Blue Hose the lead. Howard
scored the final run of the afternoon on a sacrifice fly by Matt
Sparrow (Lake City, SC). Robert
Cole (Savannah, GA) picked up the win on the mound for
the Blue Hose, throwing four and a third innings, allowing
only one earned run on three hits. Brent Savin
(Wantagh, NY) took the loss for Molloy. Rodebaugh and Kemper
Booth (Hendersonville, NC) both had two hits to lead
PC. No Lion batter had more than one hit. In game
one, Belton scored on a double steal with Donald
Sheppard (Sylvania, GA) in the bottom of the sixth to
give the Blue Hose the lead for good. Molloy
jumped on the board in the top of the first when Joe Holden
(Wantagh, NY) singled and scored on a single by Darren Bell
(Westbury, NY). After scoring a run in the second, PC took the
lead with two runs in the third and one more in the fourth.
The Lions tied it with two runs in the fifth and one in the
sixth, but Belton’s run sealed the win for the Blue Hose. Ross
Ellis (Kings Mountain, NC) picked up the win for PC,
pitching two innings of hitless ball with two strikeouts. Dennis
Conroy (West Hempstead, NY) took the loss for Molloy.
Belton and Howard led PC at the plate with two hits apiece.
Belton also finished the game with a program record four
stolen bases. No Molloy hitter had more than one hit. PC will be back in action tomorrow as they open up South Atlantic Conference play against Carson-Newman with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm. |
