PRESBYTERIAN SURVIVES BATTLE WITH NEWBERRY

GREENEVILLE, TN — A run-scoring double by Presbyterian College’s Andrew Cockerham (Millers Creek, N.C.) in the eighth inning lifted the eighth-seeded Blue Hose to a 4-3 victory over arch-rival and No. 7 seed Newberry College to stay alive in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference baseball tournament Saturday morning at Pioneer Park.

The contest spanned two days beginning Friday night and was delayed because of thunderstorms in the northeast Tennessee area.

PC did all of its scoring in its first and last at-bat, plating three runs in the bottom of the first and one in the eighth. Matt Bodie (Aiken, S.C.) put the first two runs on the board with a two-run single to score Russell Robinson (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) and Nick Hoffner (Ellicot, Md.). Jake Lunnen gave Presbyterian a 3-0 lead on a RBI groundout.

Once play resumed in the third on Saturday, Newberry starter Will Folk (Charleston, S.C.) settled down and did not allow another run to score until the eighth. He was tagged with the loss (3-6), but aside from the first inning, he gave up just five hits and one earned run.

The Indians crept back into the contest with two runs in the fourth thanks to a single by Ryan Easterby (Charleston, S.C.) and a groundout from Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.). The Tribe tied the score at 3-3 in the sixth on another RBI groundout, this time from Curt Marshall (Rock Hill, S.C.).

PC broke the tie on Cockerham’s double and Dan Stankus (Alexandria, Va.) survived a warning-track fly ball from Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, S.C.) for the final out. Stankus improves to 5-1 on the year.

Presbyterian (16-35) turns right around to face No. 2 seed and host Tusculum College Saturday afternoon. Newberry ends the season at 19-35.
