BLUE HOSE EARN DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT ON OPENING DAY

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team earned a split against St. Andrews College on Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 9-8 before falling 7-6 in the nightcap.

In the first game, the Blue Hose (1-1) held a 7-6 lead heading into the top of the ninth, but the Knights (1-3) scored two runs to take the lead.

Josh Craig (Lombardy, ON, Canada) singled to start off the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Stewart Redding (Laurinburg, N.C.) then doubled to right-center field to score Craig and knot the score at 7. Cliff Allred (Franklinville, N.C.) then stepped up and drilled a double to center to score Redding and give the Knights a one-run lead.

The Blue Hose won it in the bottom of the ninth when Andrew Cockerham (Millers Creek, N.C.) reached first on a passed ball after a strikeout and scored on a Jake Lunnen (Sylva, N.C.) single to right.  Pinch runner Nick Hoffner (Ellicott City, Md.) scored the winning run on a single by pinch hitter Lance Howard (Simpsonville, S.C.).

Cockerham led PC with three hits and three runs scored, while Lunnen and Casey Carlson (Lexington, S.C.) added two hits apiece. Redding led St. Andrews with three hits, while Brad Smith (Riegalwood, N.C.)  Everett Kelly (Wilmington, N.C.), Craig, and Marc Hammonds (Polkton, N.C.) all had two hits.

Dan Stankus (Alexandria, Va.) picked up the win on the mound for the Blue Hose. Matt Yates (Vinton, Va.) took the loss for the Knights.

In the nightcap, PC jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first inning, highlighted by a two-run homerun by Robert Rodebaugh (Marietta, Ga.), but the Knights scored six runs in the top of the fourth to take control of the game.

The Blue Hose attempted to tie it up in the bottom of the seventh, but St. Andrews pitcher T.J. Chrusch (Fleetwood, Pa.) got a strikeout to end the game.

Kelly led St. Andrews with four hits and three RBI’s. Redding paced the Knights with three hits and Redding finished with two.  

Jeff Shelton (Coloniel Heights, Va.) picked up the win on the mound, pitching six innings and allowing only two runs. Jim Wagers (Blackstock, S.C.) took the loss for PC.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday for a single game at 1:00 p.m.
