March 19, 2005 BLUE HOSE SWEEP PAIR FROM WINGATE CLINTON, SC - Freshman Rob McEwen (Leesville, SC) pitched a no-hitter in the second game to lead Presbyterian College to a doubleheader sweep over Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. PC (8-21, 2-6) won the first game 5-4 in ten innings before taking the nightcap 2-0. The
day was highlighted by a ceremony announcing the establishment
of The Curtis Bell Scholarship to honor the memory of the late Curtis Bell, a 2004
graduate of Presbyterian College.
The
scholarship has been established at PC by 2003 PC alumni Richard
Barkley and Heath McCutcheon, and 2004 alumni Philip
Hauserman, Travis Hill, Todd Warren, and Kevin
White, in Bell’s memory and for the support of one
student-athlete from the Blue Hose baseball program who
exhibits Bell’s characteristics and qualities. The
scholarship will be awarded to a freshman baseball player from
South Carolina or Georgia who will hold the award throughout
his career at PC. Only one scholar-athlete will hold the
scholarship at any given time. Game #1 - PC 5, Wingate 4 (10 Innings) Sophomore Matt Sparrow (Lake City, SC) hit a double in the bottom of the tenth to send junior Nick Hoffner (Ellicott City, MD) across the plate to give the Blue Hose the 5-4 victory. After allowing two runs in the top of the first, PC came back and took the lead in the bottom of the inning with three runs. Wingate (11-21, 3-5) took the lead in the top of the third, but PC tied it back up with a run in the bottom of the sixth, which is where it stayed until Sparrows hit in the tenth. Sophomore Dan Stankus (Alexandria, VA) picked up the win on the mound for the Blue Hose, throwing seven and a third innings an allowing no runs on nine hits. Junior Stuart Richardson (Aberdeen, NC) took the loss for Wingate. Sparrow
led the Blue Hose with three hits, while junior Matt
Bodie (Aiken, SC) finished with two. Freshman Dan
Brooks (Monroe, NC) and Sophomores Josh Benton
(Gold Hill, NC) and Jay Barnes (Strasburg, VA) all
finished with three hits for the Bulldogs. Game #2 - PC 2, Wingate 0 In the nightcap, McEwen overcame three errors by the Blue Hose defense to pitch a complete game no-hit shutout and lift PC to a 2-0 win. PC scored the only run that it would need in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Matt Bodie. PC added their other run of the night in the fifth when junior Lance Howard (Simpsonville, SC) singled to score Hoffner. Hoffner led PC with two hits. Both teams will be back in action tomorrow at 1 pm to complete their three game series. |
