16, 2004 BELMONT ABBEY DEFEATS PC 12-11 IN EXTRA INNINGS BELMONT, N.C. — Belmont Abbey College defeated Presbyterian College 12-11 in extra innings Friday afternoon in Belmont, N.C. PC falls to 23-22 overall while Belmont Abbey goes to 10-41 overall. The Crusaders took the early lead in the first inning with Derek Brown (Mastic Beach, NY) scoring on a wild pitch and Brett Davis (Hampton, GA) scoring on a double by Alex Udwari (Silver Spring, MD). In the second inning, the Blue Hose were able to score three runs to go ahead 3-2. Senior Curtis Bell (Gilbert, SC) doubled to led off the inning and later scored on a RBI single by junior Jake Lunnen (Sylva, NC). Lunnen then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Evan Sowell (Chesterfield, SC) followed by Nick Hoffner's (Elliot City, MD) RBI single that scored Robbie Parrish (Myrtle Beach, SC). PC added another run in the third and three more runs in the fifth to take their lead to 7-2. The third inning was sparked by Bell's single that drove in senior Kevin White (Spartanburg, SC). Belmont Abbey answered back in the sixth by scoring four runs on three hits and one error to close PC's lead to 7-6. The inning was highlighted by Brown's doubled that scored Daniel Clayton (Belmont, NC) and Brandon Brooks (Wedgefield, SC). The Blue Hose struck again in the eighth with Sowell stealing home to go ahead 8-6. In the bottom half of the inning, Belmont Abbey was able to add another run as well. Udwari had an RBI single that drove in Matt Waldron (Jacksonville, FL). Entering the last inning, PC added one more run in the ninth but were not able to finish off the Crusaders. Belmont scored two runs in the last inning to tie the game at 9-9. In extra innings, the Blue Hose scored two runs in the tenth with Donald Sheppard (Sylvania, GA) hitting a RBI single and John Berrian (Lexington, SC) smacking a RBI single. However, the Crusaders came back in the bottom half of the inning to score three runs and prevail 12-11. PC's Robert Cook (Clinton, SC) picks up the loss while Belmont Abbey's Brent Duckworth (Lincolnton, NC) picks up the victory. Presbyterian returns to action today against SAC foe Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. |
