HAWAI‘I PACIFIC & PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE SPLIT 
DOUBLEHEADER
ON ST. PATTY’S DAY

HONOLULU, HI — The Hawai‘i Pacific University baseball team wrapped up a six-games series by splitting a pair of games with Presbyterian College, losing 7-1 and winning 13-8, at the Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawai‘i Wednesday evening.

In the first game, PC’s junior lefthander Zach Matthews (Batesburg, S.C.) threw a complete game six-hitter, allowing one earned run and striking out five batters. Matthews pitched seven solid innings and allowed only one extra base hit in his outing.

The Blue Hose scored four runs in the first three innings on a pair of wild pitches, a Sea Warrior error, and a balk to go ahead 4-0. Hawaii cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third, but PC closed the game with a three-run seventh inning highlighted by a two-run homer from junior first baseman Jake Lunnen (Sylva, N.C.) and an RBI-single from freshman catcher Kemper Booth (Hendersonville, N.C.) to win 7-1.

PC’s senior outfielder Kevin White (Spartanburg, S.C.) went three-for-three at the plate with a double and a triple to go along with three runs scored. Lunnen was one-for-two at the plate with  a homer and two RBI. HPU’s Geoffrey Say went three-for-four with a double and scored the teams only run.  Mike Pelsnik pitched five innings and gave up four runs while picking up the loss.  He threw three wild pitches and tied Sean Joines for most wild pitches in a season at 11.

In the second game, all nine of HPU’s batters recorded a hit, with Say and sophomore Grandon Costa leading the way.  The sophomore sensations each went two-for-five. Say had a triple, two RBI’s, scored two runs, and stole a base; while Costa had a triple, a double, two RBI’s, and scored two runs. Southpaw Kai Austin was credited with the win, having left the game with a one run lead in the sixth inning. Sean Paiva closed the game and picked up his first save.

PC’s senior pitcher Charles Assey (W. Columbia, S.C.) picked up the loss after going four and two-third innings allowing eight runs, six earned on six hits and five walks. Lunnen led the way at the plate going two-for-five with four RBI and a double while White hit his team-best seventh homerun of the season. Freshmen catcher Robert Rodebaugh (Marietta, Ga.) and third baseman Davan Abney (Taylors, S.C.) each collected a pair of hits in the second game including Abney hitting his first collegiate homerun to lead off sixth inning.

Hawai‘i Pacific University stands at 8-14 on the season while Presbyterian College is 13-13 on the year. The Blue Hose return to action this weekend as they host the Indians of Catawba College in a three-game series starting on Saturday, March 20 with a 12 noon doubleheader.
