KENNESAW STATE SWEEPS BLUE HOSE 5-4 & 7-0 ON SENIOR DAY

Kennesaw, GA — Senior shortstop Dustin Atkinson launched a two-out home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game and Derrick Tucker singled in the winning run three batters later as Kennesaw State came from behind to defeat Presbyterian College 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader sweep at Stillwell Stadium. Kennesaw State took the Senior Day nightcap 7-0.

It was all long balls for the Owls as they blasted five home runs on the afternoon including one in each game by Scott Hendrix.

Kennesaw State (30-22) fell behind early as back-to-back hits by Curtis Bell (1-for-3) and Phil Hauserman (1-for-3) in the top of the second inning gave the Blue Hose a 1-0 lead.

Jon Love (1-for-3) quickly gave KSU the lead on a two-run, opposite field homer to right off Presbyterian starter Robert Cole.

A two-run third inning pushed the lead back in favor of Presbyterian. Howard led off the frame with a walk and Evan Sowell (2-for-3) reached on a bunt single as Lance Howard (0-for-2) advanced to third on a wild throw to first by Kennesaw State pitcher Shannon van Wyck.

A fly ball to left by Donald Sheppard (1-for-4) scored Howard to tie the game at two. However, the second big base running mistake of the game cost Presbyterian (25-27) a chance at a big inning as Sowell was picked off first base by van Wyck. After a walk to Robbie Parrish (1-for-3), Kevin White (2-for-4) tripled to left field to give PC a 3-2 lead.

Hendrix led off the bottom of the fourth inning with his tenth home run of the season to tie the game at three where it stayed until PC took it's third lead of the contest on an RBI single by Parrish.

Cole (5-4) was cruising through the first six innings for the Blue Hose as he allowed just three hits. The left-hander struck out Scott Conway (0-for-3) to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning and got Love to fly to right field before Atkinson (1-for-2) launched his home run to left field to tie the game. A pair of walks to Wes Newsome and Clint Watters seemed to mark a rapidly closing end to Cole's afternoon and Tucker's ground single between shortstop and third base brought home the game-winning run.

Sammy Reed (6-2) picked up the win in relief as the Owls used a trio of seniors in the game. Shannon van Wyck started and allowed two earned runs in four innings of work. Scott Bradley tossed two and a third innings of three hit relief before giving way to Reed in the seventh inning.
