PAIRINGS ANNOUNCED FOR 2004 FOOD LION SAC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
Blue Hose seeded fourth in upcoming SAC Tournament

ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Catawba College Indians, who went 17-4 in conference play and won the regular season title by three games, are the top seed for the 2004 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference baseball tournament, which kicks off Thursday at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill, S.C.

The Indians (17-4, 37-14) will face eighth seed Mars Hill College (5-16, 15-35) in the nightcap game at 8:15 p.m. Catawba is led by Spence Southard, who set the Catawba career record for RBIs with 156, Mark Smith, who set a season record with 61 runs scored and Matt Baker, who set a school record with 150 total bases. The Lions are led by Matt Reed, who set a school record with 16 home runs this season.

The tournament kicks off with fifth seed Carson-Newman College (10-11, 28-23-1) meeting fourth seed Presbyterian College (11-10, 25-23) at 9 a.m. The Eagles are led by junior outfielder Nathan Gravley and ace pitcher Chad Gills. The Blue Hose, the tournament’s defending champion, is led by slugger and pitcher Kevin White. White’s seven mound victories are among the best in the nation.

Sixth seed Lenoir-Rhyne College will face third seed Wingate University at 12:45 p.m. Sophomore first baseman Matt Sigmon has developed into one of the best hitters in the conference for the Bears (8-13, 23-23). The Bulldogs (13-8, 20-31) are led by shortstop David Yount, who leads the team in batting average, hits, runs, triples and stolen bases.

Seventh seed Newberry College (6-15, 21-29) meets second seed Tusculum College (14-7, 29-22) at 4:30 p.m. Stuart Kay set the Newberry career home run record with his 27th homer. Tusculum was the preseason favorite to win the league title. Guy O’Connell, last year’s Baseball Player of the Year, is having another strong year, while Robbie Bouman is riding a 35-game hitting streak.

Tournament play continues with three games at Winthrop University and three games at Knights Stadium on Friday. Three more games are set for Saturday at Knights Stadium. The championship game will be played Sunday at Knights Stadium at 1 p.m., with a second game, if necessary, to follow.
