BLUE HOSE AND EAGLES SPLIT SUNDAY BASEBALL DOUBLEHEADER

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman Eagles and Presbyterian Blue Hose split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. The Eagles won the first game 10-2 and Blue Hose won the second contest, 7-4.

The Blue Hose win the opening series of the South Atlantic Conference schedule 2-1 as they won Saturday’s game, 9-4. PC improves to 7-6 overall, 2-1 in conference play. The Eagles fall to 9-10-1, 1-2.

Game 1- Eagles 10, Blue Hose 2

The Eagles snapped out of their homerun deficit by hitting four long balls and cruised to a 10-2 win in game one.

Brian Chapman (Caryville, Tenn.) gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead in the third inning when he hit a three-run homer to center field. The Blue Hose cut into the lead in the fifth to 5-2 when Jake Lunnen (Sylva, N.C) homered and Lance Howard (Simpsonville, S.C.) singled to right to score Donald Sheppard (Sylvania, Ga.).

But the Eagles exploded for five runs in the fifth inning. Nathan Gravley (Cartersville, Ga.) blasted a two-run homer to left field and he was followed by a solo homerun by T.J. Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio). Later in the inning, Derrick Calkin (Maryville, Tenn.) would steal home and a PC error would allow Charlie Munroe (Newton, N.J.) to score to produce the 10-2 final.

Game 2- Blue Hose 7, Eagles 4

The Blue Hose rallied from a 3-2 deficit to take the third game of the SAC opening weekend series with a 7-4 win over the Eagles.

After PC had built a 2-0 lead in the second, the Eagles answered with three runs in the third inning. Chapman scored on a single to center field, Derek Milligan (Powell, Tenn.) scored on a ground-out in the infield and Calkin doubled down the left field line to plate Chapman to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

The Blue Hose would seize the lead in the fourth on a ground-out RBI by Philip Hauserman (Decatur, Ga.) and an infield single by Sheppard that plated Jonathan Wyman (Duluth, Ga.). After the Blue Hose added another run in the sixth, the Eagles cut the lead to 5-4 on a single by Milligan that brought Jonathan Mary (Maryville, Tenn.) home. The Eagles let a great chance to take the lead slip away as they left the bases loaded to end the sixth inning.

Kevin White (Spartanburg, S.C.) put the exclamation point on the PC win when he connected on a two-run homerun to right center in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 7-4.
