AND CATAWBA SPLIT TODAY'S CLINTON, S.C.. The Presbyterian College Blue Hose and Catawba College Indians split today's doubleheader. The Indians won game one, 7-2 while the Blue Hose won game two, 10-9. Presbyterian goes to 14-14 overall and 3-5 in the SAC while Catawba goes to 23-10 overall and 6-2 in the SAC. Game 1- CATAWBA 7, PRESBYTERIAN 2 The Indians struck early by
scoring three runs in the top of the first. The inning was
highlighted by Spence Southard’s (Greensboro, NC)
double off the fence that scored Matt Baker (Charlotte,
NC). Down 3-0, PC was able to score one run in the bottom of
the inning with senior Curtis
Bell (Gilbert, SC) hitting a single to drive in Donald
Sheppard (Sylvania, GA). Catawba scored three more
runs in the top of the third with Thomas Giles
(Lynchburg, VA) hitting a single to drive in two runs. Both Mark
Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) and Matt Smith (Browns
Summitt, NC) scored on Giles’ single. In the top of the eighth, the
Indians were able to score one run to increase their lead to
7-1. Mark Smith drove in sophomore Nick Lefko (Faith,
NC) on a sacrifice fly. Presbyterian rallied for one run in
the bottom half of the inning with sophomore Nick
Hoffner (Elliot City, MD) hitting a single to
drive in pinch runner Matt
Sparrow (Lake City, SC). The Blue Hose could not mount
a rally in the bottom of the ninth and fell to the Catawba
Indians 7-2 in game one of the doubleheader. Junior pitcher Thomas
Wilson (Cleveland, NC) picked up his fourth victory of the
year while PC’s Travis Hill
(Rock Hill, SC) picked up the loss. Game 2- PRESBYTERIAN 10, CATAWBA 9 In game two, Catawba scored seven runs in the first inning. Presbyterian walked in three runs while Mark Smith hit a double that drove in three runs. Scott Searles (Boston, MA) also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. PC would score four runs in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 7-4. Both Hoffner and Matt Bodie (Aiken, SC) would drive in runs during the inning for the Blue Hose. The Blue Hose exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead 8-7. The inning was capped off by shortstop Evan Sowell's (Chesterfield, SC) triple that drove in three runs. PC's senior Kevin White (Spartanburg, SC) gave the Blue Hose a two run cushion in the bottom of the fifth by driving in freshman Ben Tankersley (Evans, GA). The Blue Hose would tack on another run in the bottom of the sixth with Robert Rodebaugh (Marietta, GA) hitting a sacrifice fly to leftfield to score senior Philip Hauserman (Decatur, GA) to give PC the 10-7 advantage entering the last inning. Catawba made things interesting by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh. However, the Indians comeback fell short leaving the bases loaded and losing 10-9. Catawba's Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC), and Searles both had RBI singles in the inning for the Indians. PC's White picked up his fourth victory of the year while Nick Mayle (Landis, NC) picked up the loss for the Catawba Indians. Both teams return to action tomorrow afternoon for a single game starting at 1 p.m. |
