FLYING FLEET HOLD OFF BLUE HOSE 9-8 IN BASEBALL ACTION

CLINTON, S.C. — Erskine College’s junior second baseman Wes Edwards (Anderson, S.C.) went two-for-five at the plate with a pair of doubles and four RBI to lead the Flying Fleet to a 9-8 win over host Presbyterian College in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. The Flying Fleet improve to 15-3 on the season while the Blue Hose fall to 7-7.

Erskine broke open a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning on an RBI single from junior outfielder Michael Dean (Piedmont, S.C.). The Blue Hose responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 6-3. After sophomore shortstop Evan Sowell (Chesterfield, S.C.) opened the inning with a single, senior outfielder Kevin White (Spartanburg, S.C.) connected on his second homerun of the season to put PC ahead 4-3. An error by the Flying Fleet scored PC’s senior third baseman Curtis Bell (Gilbert, S.C.) followed by a RBI double from junior first baseman Jake Lunnen (Sylva, N.C.) to increase PC’s lead to 6-3.

After the Blue Hose pushed the lead to 7-3 in the fifth, Erskine scored five runs in the top of the sixth to pull ahead 8-7. The Flying Fleet opened the inning with a pair of doubles, the second from junior Robbie Knapp (St. Augustine’s, Fla.) scored the first run. A Blue Hose error brought home the second run followed by fielder’s choice by Edwards scored another run. A wild pitch and a single from senior catcher Bret Smagala (Mount Airy, N.C.) scored the other runs in the inning.

PC tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the inning on a fielder’s choice by senior outfielder Philip Hauserman (Decatur, Ga.). Erskine scored the go ahead run in the seventh on Edwards’ second double of the day.

Erskine’s sophomore pitcher Matt Baker (Marion, S.C.) picked up the win after going one and one-third innings allowing two runs, one earned on two hits. Junior Chad Hinson (Mullins, S.C.) picked up the save after going three and two-third innings of hitless relief pitching. PC’s freshman pitcher Max Fischer (Cumming, Ga.) took the loss after going three innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out five batters.

PC was led at the plate by White who went two-for-four with a homerun and three RBI while Lunnen went four-for-five with a pair of RBI. Joining Edwards for the Flying Fleet was Dean who went three-for-five with a pair of runs scored.

The Blue Hose return to action this weekend against fellow SAC opponent Tusculum College in Clinton, S.C. Presbyterian and Tusculum will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 noon at a single game on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. Erskine returns to action tomorrow afternoon against Mars Hill College starting at 2:30 p.m.
