Sunday, April 4, 2004 PRESBYTERIAN BASEBALL DEFEATS MARS HILL 10-5 IN SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE ACTION CLINTON, S.C.. The Presbyterian College Blue Hose defeated Mars Hill College 10-5 Sunday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. The Blue Hose improve to 20-18 overall and 7-8 in South Atlantic Conference play while the Lions fall to 11-30 overall and 3-12 in the SAC. Game 1- PRESBYTERIAN 10, MARS HILL 5 Presbyterian’s
senior third baseman Curtis
Bell (Gilbert, SC) slapped a single to leftfield to
score Kevin White (Spartanburg, SC) and Jake Lunnen
(Sylva, NC) to give the Blue Hose an early 2-0 lead in the
first inning. The Blue
Hose struck again in the third with Philip
Hauserman (Decatur, GA) hitting a solo homerun, his
first of the season, and sophomore shortstop Evan
Sowell (Chesterfield, SC) scoring on a grounder hit by
second baseman Donald
Sheppard (Slyvania, GA). In the
bottom of the fifth, PC’s designated hitter Robert
Rodebaugh (Marietta, GA) smashed a base hit that
scored White to give the Blue Hose a 5-0 lead. However, Mars Hill rallied back in the top of the eighth with catcher Jeff Mayo (Enfield, CT) hitting a double that scored John Quail (Boonsboro, MD) and Matt Russell (Chapel Hill, NC). The Lions would rally again in the ninth to score three runs on three hits only to fall short to the Blue Hose 10-5. Sophomore Chris O'Conner (Morovia, MD) smacked a double that drove in two runs and Quail hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Matt Mitchell (Chesapeake, VA). PC's Robert Cole (Savannah, GA) performed great on the mound going eight innings and picking up his fourth victory of the season. Mars Hill's freshman right-hander Gary Lee (Chesapeake, VA) picked up the loss for the Lions. Leading Presbyterian at the plate were Bell who went three for four with two RBI and a run scored and White (1-4) with three RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore catcher Mayo led Mars Hill at the plate going three for four with two RBI's. The Blue Hose return to play Wednesday, April 7 against Lander University in Greenwood, S.C. with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The Lions return to action Tuesday, April 6 against Erskine College for a doubleheader at home starting at 1:00 p.m. |
