BLUE HOSE AND RAMS SPLIT TODAY’S BASEBALL DOUBLEHEADER
PC rallies to win the first game 10-9 while Shepherd wins 
second game 16-10

CLINTON, S.C. — Presbyterian College and Shepherd College split games in today’s non-conference baseball doubleheader held at the PC Baseball Complex Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hose rallied to win the first game by a score of 10-9 while the Rams won the second game 16-10.

GAME #1 — PRESBYTERIAN 10, SHEPHERD 9

PC’s sophomore shortstop Evan Sowell (Chesterfield, S.C.) had a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the ninth to score teammate sophomore second baseman Donald Sheppard (Sylvania, Ga.) to break a 9-9 tie to lift the Blue Hose to a 10-9 victory over Shepherd College.

The Rams broke open a 2-2 tie game with a six-run third inning to take an 8-2 lead. Shepherd got RBI singles from five different players in the rally. In the bottom of the inning, PC picked up three runs to cut the lead to 8-5 highlighted by an RBI single from senior third baseman Curtis Bell (Gilbert, S.C.) and a base-loaded hit-by-pitch with scored junior first baseman Jake Lunnen (Sylva, N.C.). Both teams scored a run in the fifth, but PC pulled to within 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI-double from redshirt junior outfielder Lance Howard (Simpsonville, S.C.) and a sacrifice RBI from Bell.

PC’s sophomore pitcher Robert Cook (Clinton, S.C.) picked up the win after going six and one-third innings allowing two earned runs on eight hits while striking out three batters. Shepherd’s sophomore Tony Magnanelli (Frederick, MD) took the loss after going three and one-third innings allowing three runs, two earned on six hits. At the plate, Bell and Lunnen led the Blue Hose by each going two-for-three with two RBI while Sheppard drove added three RBI for the game. Sheppard was led by senior second baseman Jason Walck (Wayensboro, PA) who went three-for-five at the plate with two RBI.

GAME #2 — SHEPHERD 16, PRESBYTERIAN 10

Shepherd College and Presbyterian College pounded out a combined 26 runs on 27 hits as the Rams built a early 13-4 lead in the third inning and held on to win 16-10 in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Rams went ahead 5-0 in the top of the first inning keyed by senior catcher Jon Serrano’s (Stafford, VA) two-RBI single. PC trimmed the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the inning on a two-RBI single from freshman catcher Robert Rodebaugh (Marietta, Ga.). Shepherd pulled ahead 13-2 in the top of third after senior first baseman Charlie Drummond (Strasburg, VA) hit a two-run homerun while senior outfielder Tavis Laws (Stephens City, VA) and sophomore outfielder Joe Cook (Leesburg, VA) each hit RBI doubles. The Blue Hose cut the lead to 13-4 in the bottom of the inning on an RBI singles from Lunnen and Sheppard.

The Blue Hose continue to chip away at the lead and after a five-run fifth inning trailed by only four runs at 13-9. The inning was keyed by three RBI  triple by Sowell. Shepherd added two runs in the top of the sixth to stretch the lead to 15-9 on a RBI single from Serrano. Both teams would score a run in the seventh as the Rams held on to win 16-10.

Junior pitcher Scott Koscielnak (Severn, MD) picked up the win after going four and one-third innings allowing five runs on seven hits. PC’s freshman pitcher Max Fischer (Cumming, Ga.) took the loss after going one inning allowing five runs on five hits.

At the plate the Rams were led by Drummond who went three-for-three with four RBI while Serrano went three-for-five with three runs scored. Serrano also went three-for-five with three RBI for Shepherd. PC was led by Rodebaugh who went two-for-two with two RBI and Sowell who drove in three RBI.

PC and Shepherd will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 12 noon to finish the four-game weekend series.
