Sunday, February 22, 2004 BLUE HOSE BASEBALL SWEEPS SHEPHERD 9-5 & 1-0 CLINTON,
S.C. — The Presbyterian College Blue Hose swept a
doubleheader from the visiting Rams of Shepherd College Sunday
afternoon by the scores of 9-5 & 1-0 and in the process
clinched head coach Doug Kovash’s 300th win as skipper of the Blue Hose. The Blue Hose even their
record to 5-5 on the season while the Rams fall to 1-3 on the
season. Kovash has compiled a record of 300 wins against 259
losses and two ties in his 10+ seasons as head coach of the
Blue Hose. He has another milestone to chase this season as he
will now go after his 400th career win in 15 years of head
coaching. He currently stands at 395 career wins against 350
losses and two ties. GAME #1 — PRESBYTERIAN 9, SHEPHERD 5 PC took an early 2-0 lead
in the first inning thanks in part to an RBI-double by senior
outfielder Kevin White (Spartanburg,
S.C.) and a sac fly by senior third baseman Curtis
Bell (Gilbert, S.C.). The lead increased to 3-0 in the
second after an RBI-double from senior outfielder Philip
Hauserman (Decatur, Ga.). The Rams cut the lead to 3-2 in
the third on a RBI-single by senior outfielder Josh
Delawder (Paw Paw, WV). Shepherd pulled even at 3-3
in the fourth on an RBI-single by senior second baseman Jason Walck (Waynesboro, PA). The Blue Hose responded with a
four-run fifth inning keyed by a solo homerun by junior
catcher Jonathan Wyman (Duluth,
Ga.), and RBI-single by sophomore shortstop Evan
Sowell (Chesterfield, S.C.) and a RBI-double from
Hauserman. After pushing the lead to 8-3 in the seventh,
Shepherd responded with a run in the top of the eighth to cut
the lead to 8-4. The Blue Hose added an insurance run in the
ninth to go ahead 9-4. PC’s junior pitcher Matt
Boone (Kernersville, N.C.) came in to pitch in the ninth
with the score 9-5 and the bases loaded with two outs. Boone
struck out the final Ram’s batter to pick up the save. Senior pitcher Travis Hill (Rock Hill, S.C.) picked up the win for PC after
throwing five innings of relief work allowing two runs, one
earned on four hits while striking out six batters.
Shepherd’s sophomore pitcher Brian
Chevalier (Herndon, Va.) took the loss after going two and
one-third innings and allowing four earned runs on seven hits.
At the plate, PC was led by Hauserman and Sowell who each went
three-for-four. Hauserman added a pair of RBI. Shepherd was
led by senior third baseman Shane
Wines (Front Royal, Va.) who went three-for-five at the
plate. GAME #2 — PRESBYTERIAN 1, SHEPHERD 0 In the second game, PC’s Kevin White pitched a complete game four-hitter to shutout the Rams 1-0. White faced 26 batters and struck out three while scattering four singles. PC scored the lone run of the game in the third on an RBI-single from junior first baseman Jake Lunnen (Sylva, N.C.). Shepherd’s starting pitcher, sophomore Brad McCullough (New Freedom, PA) took the loss after going five innings allowing one run on three hits and striking out four batters. The Blue Hose return to
action next weekend when they travel to Jefferson City, TN to
face the Eagles of Carson-Newman College to open South
Atlantic Conference play in a three-game series. The Rams
return to action next weekend when they return to the state of
South Carolina for a four-game series against the Indians of
Newberry College. |
