WINGATE RALLIES FOR 8-7
SAC BASEBALL WIN OVER PRESBYTERIAN
Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University baseball team
rallied from a late 7-5 deficit with three runs in the bottom
of the eighth inning to take an 8-7 South Atlantic Conference
win over Presbyterian College Sunday afternoon at Ron
Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Senior
shortstop David Yount (Forest City, N.C.) had the
game-winning double in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Wingate is 15-24 overall (8-4 SAC), while Presbyterian is
16-18 overall (4-8 SAC). The Bulldogs will play Catawba
College Tuesday night (6 p.m.) in Kannapolis, while the Blue
Hose visit Erskine College Tuesday afternoon (3 p.m.).
Bulldog senior outfielder Andrew Connor (Randleman,
N.C.) was three-for-four with two RBI, while sophomore
designated hitter Kirk Matthews (East Bend, N.C.) was
three-for-four with one RBI. Wingate sophomore pitcher Jimmy
Bowman (Hiddenite, N.C.) picked up his first collegiate
win in relief.
In the Wingate eighth, the Bulldogs scored three runs to take
the lead. Redshirt freshman Jeff Vitaris (Seneca, S.C.)
reached on a hit batsman to start the rally. Sophomore Seth
Howell (Jefferson, S.C.) entered to pinch-run for Vitaris.
Senior catcher Chad Emery (Fairview, N.C.) plated
Howell with an RBI double to left field.
Connor greeting PC freshman reliever Max Fischer (0-5
overall) with an RBI single to score Emery with the tying run.
Senior first baseman Sherman Greer (Stanfield, N.C.)
singled to put runners at the corners. Yount doubled to right
center to score Connor with the game-winning run. Yount is
hitting .417 with runners on base.
The Blue Hose took a 6-5 lead with four runs in the top of the
sixth inning. Presbyterian junior first baseman Jake Lunnen
and senior third baseman Curtis Bell were both hit by a
pitch from Wingate starter Andy McKinney (Matthews,
N.C.). Senior outfielder Philip Hauserman singled to
load the bases.
PC freshman catcher Kemper Booth followed with a
two-RBI single to score Lunnen and Bell and move Hauserman to
third. Wingate sophomore left-hander Stuart Richardson
(Aberdeen, N.C.) replaced McKinney on the mound. Richardson
struck out PC sophomore shortstop Evan Sowell for out
number two.
Blue Hose freshman outfielder Matt Sparrow and junior
second baseman Donald Sheppard
followed with
back-to-back RBI singles to score Hauserman and Booth,
respectively. The visitors upped their lead to 7-5 in the top
of the eighth on a perfectly executed squeeze play by
Sheppard. His RBI bunt single scored Sowell.
After Presbyterian scored one run on two walks and an error in
the top of the first inning, Wingate answered with four runs
in the bottom of the first frame. Sophomore third baseman Tim
Bowman (Low Gap, N.C.) and senior outfielder Andrew
Connor (Randleman, N.C.) opened the first with
back-to-back walks.
Bulldog senior first baseman Sherman Greer (Stanfield,
N.C.) followed with a towering home run to center field.
Greer’s team-leading seventh homer plated three runs. The
hosts added another run when senior shortstop David Yount
(Forest City, N.C.) singled, moved to second on a ground out
and scored on an RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Kirk
Matthews (East Bend, N.C.).
Connor contributed an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth
inning to push Wingate’s lead to 5-1. Connor’s single
plated senior catcher Chad Emery (Fairview, N.C.), who
had singled to lead off the fourth frame.
Connor and Matthews had three hits each to lead the Wingate
offensive attack. Three other Bulldogs had two hits each.
Presbyterian senior outfielder Philip Hauserman was
three-for-four with two runs scored for the Blue Hose.
Sheppard was two-for-four with three RBI.
Wingate sophomore pitcher Jimmy Bowman (Hiddenite,
N.C.) pitched 2 1/3 innings of solid relief, allowing one run
on three hits. He struck out one and walked two. Bulldog
sophomore pitcher Ryan DeFaber (Charlotte, N.C.) earned
his first collegiate save with one inning of one-hit ball.
Presbyterian junior left-hander Zachary Matthews gave
the Blue Hose an outstanding performance in relief. He pitched
seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. Matthews
struck out four and walked two.
