PC SURRENDERS TWO SAC VICTORIES TO CATAWBA 12-7, 9-3

CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College Blue Hose baseball team lost two home South Atlantic Conference games today to visiting Catawba College at the PC Baseball Complex, 12-7, 9-3. PC will get a third chance at Catawba tomorrow, as the two teams finish up this three-game series at 1:00 p.m.

Game 1 Catawba 12, PC 7

In game 1, the Blue Hose kept things rather interesting, coming from a four run deficit in the third inning to a tied game at six-all in the fourth. PC’s four run fourth inning was led by a couple of doubles hit by senior Matt Bodie (Aiken, S.C.) and junior Kyle Craven (Savannah, Ga.).

PC wasn’t able to hang on after Catawba had a four-run inning of their own in the fifth. Three of those fifth inning runs came on a double hit by lead-off man David Thomas that cleared the already loaded bases.

Catawba stretched their lead in the eighth and ninth innings scoring one run in each inning. PC gave up one run when Mark Smith scored when Aaron Rimer was hit by a pitch and the bases were already loaded. In the ninth, Mark Smith drove in Thomas on a single up the middle, to set the final score 12-7.

Mark Smith was 4-6 from the plate with three RBI to lead the Indians at the plate. Sophomore Casey Carlson (Lexington, S.C.) and freshman Cory Lyda (Simpsonville, S.C.) had three hits and one RBI apiece to lead all Blue Hose batters.

Starter Tim Smith picked up his sixth win on the season for the Indians, while PC starter Ross Ellis got the loss.

Game 2 Catawba 9, PC 3

PC kept the game close until the fourth inning when Catawba shot out to a 6-1 lead on a double hit by Matt Smith with the bases loaded. Jimbo Davis added Catawba’s fourth run of the inning when he drove in Matt Smith on a single hit to left field.

PC closed the gap to only three runs when Carlson scored sophomore Russell Robinson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) on a single to right field and Craven scored junior Kemper Booth (Hendersonville, N.C.) on a single of his own shot up the middle.

PC couldn’t answer back as Catawba scored three runs in the last two innings to finish off the Blue Hose 9-3.

Matt Smith led all batters registering four hits and five RBI for Catawba. Craven pitched in two hits and one RBI to lead the Blue Hose batters at the plate.

The starters got the decisions on the day with Blake Ketner picking up the win for Catawba and Eric Tatum (Buford, Ga.) getting the loss for PC.
