BLUE HOSE
CLINCH FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON
OVER NO. 31 LYNN 7-6
FT.
LAUDERDALE, FLA. –
An attempt to win the third consecutive game in the ninth
inning fell just short as the Lynn University baseball team
fell 7-6 to Presbyterian College at the Second Annual Nike/OTS
Division II Baseball Challenge at Nova Southeastern
University. Felix Martinez drove in three runs but the
Fighting Knights dropped their record to 2-1 overall.
Down 7-4 with runners on first and third and two outs,
Harrison Lam loaded the bases with a walk on a 3-2 count.
Adrian Acevedo, who scored the game-winning run against Palm
Beach Atlantic College on Friday, immediately pinch ran for
Lam and would be the deciding factor in the game. Martinez
came to the plate and lined the first pitch into the left
field corner. Ricky Gerena and Jimmy Bacon easily scored
but Acevedo was held up at third then sent and was easily
thrown out at home for the final out.
The game started on Saturday before rained postponed the
game. Lynn opened up a lead after only two batters.
Nicolas Boisvert doubled down the right field line and
advanced to third on a single by Gerena. The duo
successfully attempted the double-steal to put LU up 1-0.
Two batters later Martinez drove in Gerena with a sacrifice
fly to right field.
Presbyterian (1-1) rallied for two unearned runs in the
bottom of the first after Mark Menahem threw away a
sacrifice bunt to allow leadoff hitter sophomore outfielder
Clay
Belton
(Ridgeway, S.C.) to score and freshman outfielder
Cory
Lyda
(Simpsonville,
S.C.) to advance to third. Red-shirt senior
Matt Bodie
(Aiken, S.C.) hit a single down the line before the game was
called for rain to score Lyda.
Chris Snow allowed four runs, two earned in five innings
pitched, striking out three as well. The sophomore pitcher
gave up two runs in the bottom of the second after getting
the first two batters out. Senior infielder
Evan
Sowell
(Chesterfield, S.C.) scored on a Belton double and was later
driven in by a single by Lyda.
Lynn closed the gap to one run in the fourth but gave up a
bases loaded double in the bottom of the seventh to do down
7-4.
