Harmon Strikes Out
Nine As PC Wins First Of 2007
CLINTON, S.C. – In his first
intercollegiate start, Presbyterian’s Jesse Harmon struck
out nine batters and the Blue Hose defeated Anderson 4-3 on
Sunday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex.
Harmon (1-0) pitched (Newberry, S.C.)
seven innings for the Blue Hose, surrendering six hits and
giving up three runs. He also aided his own cause by picking
up the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh
inning to score Cory Lyda (Simpsonville, S.C.) who had
started the inning by being hit by Anderson relief pitcher
Cory Welch’s pitch.
Lyda was eventually moved over to third
and Harmon singled to left center field to bring Lyda to the
dish.
The Trojans threatened to tie the game
in the top part of the ninth inning, loading the bases with
two outs.
PC Senior pitcher Ross Ellis (Kings
Mountain, N.C.) was then inserted into the game to make sure
that the feat was not achieved. It was not, as Ellis forced
Anderson designated hitter Jonathan Pitts to ground out to
PC shortstop Robert Anders (Greenville, S.C.) to end the
game.
Ellis’ exploits earned him his first
save of the season.
Anderson began the game with a two-run
lead. The Trojans scored two in the top of the second inning
on RBIs by Josh Grubbs and Derek Hipp. Grubbs reached first
on an error by PC second baseman John Berrian (Lexington,
S.C.), scoring Kyle Lewis.
Hipp then plated Derek Hipp shortly
thereafter on a liner to left field to give Anderson the 2-0
advantage.
PC clawed their way back in the bottom
of the fourth when catcher Kemper Booth (Hendersonville,
N.C.) hit a two-run home run to square the contest at 2-2.
The two teams scored a run each in the
fifth inning, including Lyda’s second scored run of the
game.
The victory was the first of the 2007
season for Presbyterian (1-2), who had opened the season on
Saturday by falling in both games of a twinbill to Anderson
(2-1) at their home field.
The Blue Hose return to action at 2
p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6. when they welcome the Cobras of
Coker College to the PC Baseball Complex.
