Craven Extends Hitting Streak To 13 Games In Loss To Erskine

CLINTON, S.C. – Erskine College jumped out to a 10-1 lead and never looked back in an 11-8 victory over Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex.

Erskine improved to 26-17 overall with the victory, while PC drops to 16-31 on the season.

Kyle Craven (Savannah, Ga.) led PC at the plate in the game, finishing the contest as the only Blue Hose to record multiple hits with two. Craven’s hits helped him to garner a new team season-high 13-game hitting streak, breaking his own record of 12 straight games of hitting safely.

Craven had accomplished the feat of 12 straight games with at least one hit twice in the 2007 season.

Keith Hill (3-for-6) finished the game for the Flying Fleet with a game-high three hits. He was one of four Erskine batters with multiple hits as Shelton Cisson, Matt Schneider and Shawn Glover all had two hits.

Cisson finished the contest with a game-best 3 RBIs, joining Greg Huff as the only Flying Fleet to record two or more RBI in the game. Huff was only 1-for-4 on the day, but managed two RBIs.

Presbyterian outscored the Flying Fleet 7-1 over the final five innings with Erin Tatum (Buford, Ga.) shutting down the Erskine attack from the pitcher’s mound.

The fourth hurler of the afternoon for the Blue Hose, Tatum pitched masterfully for the final 5.1 innings of the ballgame, striking out three and allowing only two hits.

Still, it would not be enough as the Blue Hose could not climb out of the nine-run hole that they had originally dug for themselves.

Presbyterian had six players collect RBIs on the day with Josh Milner (Greenville, S.C.), William Bolchoz (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), Andrew Cockerham (Millers Creek, N.C.), Russell Robinson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), Robert Anders (Greenville, S.C.) and Lyda all plating individuals on the afternoon.

Chachere Freeman (4-0) stayed perfect on the season with the victory from the hill for the Flying Fleet. Freeman pitched six innings of six-hit baseball for Erskine, allowing three earned runs.

Erskine closer Jake Williams came into the game with the bases jammed and the score 11-7 in favor of Erskine in the bottom of the seventh inning. Cockerham hit into a fielder’s choice shortly thereafter to set the final score at 11-8 as both teams went scoreless in the final two stanzas.

The run allowed Williams to back into his team-leading 13th save of the year.

PC starting pitcher Ross Ellis (Kings Mountain, N.C.) pitched the first three innings of the game for the Blue Hose to acquire the loss. Ellis struck out one, but allowed nine hits and six earned runs to fall to 1-3 on the year.

Presbyterian returns to the field of play once again tomorrow as they travel to Belmont Abbey to square off against the Crusaders.
