PC Comes Up Short Against No. 6 Georgia College & State

CLINTON, S.C. - PC suffered a tough 6-3 loss to 6th-ranked Georgia College & State University on Wednesday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. The loss drops Presbyterian to 9-13 on the season as GC & SU improves to 12-3.

After falling behind 4-1 in the fifth the Blue Hose would pull within one in the seventh inning, plating two off of Bobcats reliever Shaun Monica. However, that would be as close as PC would get as GC & SU tacked on two more insurance runs in the eighth for the 6-3 final.

Presbyterian drew first blood in the top of the second inning on a RBI fielder's choice by Preston Simpson (Lancaster, S.C.) plating Jesse Harmon (Newberry, S.C.).

The Bobcats answered with two runs in the third on a RBI sacrifice fly by Bryan Shaughnessy and a passed ball that proved to be the game-winner.

Georgia College added two more in their half of the fifth after Hans Stancil and Shaughnessy led off the inning with consecutive base hits. With runners on the corners a wild pitch from PC reliever Jim Wagers (Blackstock, S.C.) brought home Stancil and moved Shaughnessy all the way around to third where a sacrifice fly off the bat of Daniel Heflin scored him the next at-bat putting the Bobcats up 4-1.

Preston Simpson doubled to left to start Presbyterian's rally in the seventh inning. Robbie Anders (Greenville, S.C.) singled to left field two batters later to advance Simpson to third with one out. Anders stole second to set up a two RBI single by Kyle Craven (Savannah, Ga.) to right field. William Bolchoz (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) would reach first on a strikeout that got by the catcher to continue the Blue Hose inning. With runners at first and second the Bobcat's Matt Howard struck out Dane Fehr (St. Simons Island, Ga.) to stifle the Presbyterian rally.

GC & SU's Justin Mills and Stancil drove in the final runs of the game to put the game out of reach in the eighth.

Presbyterian out-hit the Bobcats 10-8 but stranded 11 base-runners on the day.

Mitchell Odom (0-3) claimed the loss for PC after pitching 2.1 innings, striking out five and surrendering two runs on only two hits. Bobcat's starter Ryan Bode won his second decision of the year after three innings of work, allowing one run on four hits. Michael Newman picked up the first save of the year for GC & SU, throwing the final 1.2 innings and allowing only one hit.

Presbyterian will travel to Catawba for a three-game conference series this weekend beginning with a 12:00 noon doubleheader on Saturday and concluding at 1 p.m. Sunday.
