Snipes Leads Blue Hose To Win Over West Virginia State In First Career Start

CLINTON, S.C. – Freshman Zach Snipes (1-0) went six strong innings on the mound, surrendering only two earned runs to earn his first career win as the Blue Hose rolled past West Virginia State 9-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex.

With the win the Blue Hose improve to 12-24 on the year while the Yellow Jackets drop to 15-7.

WVSU’s Tyler Courts scored the first run of the game in the top of the first. After leading off with a double, he was driven in two batters later by Brandon Halstead.

PC stormed back in their half of the first with the first three batters reaching base. Kyle Craven then put PC on the board when he grounded to WVSU’s third baseman Jonathan Stowers, who made an errant throw to the plate scoring Jesse Harmon. Casey Carlson would then drive in what turned out to be the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly the following at-bat to put runners at the corners.

The Blue Hose were then able to plate two more runs in the next at-bat without a hit. As Kyle Craven broke towards second, the throw down from the catcher sailed over second base to score Cory Lyda. The Yellow Jacket’s centerfielder Eric Workman then tried to gun down Craven hustling toward third base but his throw also missed the mark, landing at the third base fence allowing Craven to come all the way home. The fifth and final run of the inning came a few batters later when Jesse Harmon coaxed a walk with the bases loaded to score Robbie Anders.

PC would add to their lead with two runs in the third and a single run in the fourth and the eighth innings.

The Blue Hose were able to pound out 13 hits in the contest and capitalized on six Yellow Jacket errors to score five unearned runs.

Every Blue Hose starter tallied at least one hit in the game as Russell Robinson, Bobby Holmes, and Anders each had two.

Harmon finished with three RBI as he extended his hitting streak to eight games on an RBI single in the seventh inning.

WVSU’s Courts, who drove in the game-winning run in yesterday’s game, finished with three hits.

Yellow Jacket starter Ryne Holstine (0-1) was knocked from the game after three innings surrendering seven runs on five hits.

Andrew Cockerham and Eric Tatum finished the last three innings for the Blue Hose without allowing a hit or a walk.

Presbyterian will play a conference series this weekend against Carson-Newman beginning with a noon doubleheader on Saturday at the PC Baseball Complex. The final game will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
