Blue Hose Take Rubber Match Over Wingate
CLINTON, S.C.- The Presbyterian baseball team wrapped
up league play with a 14-5 victory over Wingate on a
blistery Sunday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. With
the win the Blue Hose claimed their first South Atlantic
Conference series of the season, improving to 18-35 overall
and 7-17 in conference play. After the loss the Bulldogs
fall to 21-28 and 10-13.
Ross Ellis (2-3), one of only two seniors on the PC roster,
claimed the win for the Blue Hose on Senior Day. Ellis threw
five innings allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits
while striking out four.
Trailing 3-2 after two and a half innings, PC broke out the
sticks in bottom of the third inning by plating seven runs
on eight base hits. The Blue Hose hit four doubles in the
inning including two off the bat of Cory Lyda to go along
with one apiece for both Andrew Cockerham and Casey Carlson,
with all three batters driving in a run.
Senior Kemper Booth aided the barrage with an RBI single
along with a sacrifice fly by Bobby Holmes and a fielder’s
choice to shortstop by Robbie Anders that drove in a run.
Wingate scratched across a run in the fifth and eighth
inning but were never able to make a rally as PC relievers
Daniel Hill and Andrew Cockerham pitched out of trouble in
the final four stanzas to keep the Bulldogs at bay. On the
day Wingate left 15 base runners stranded.
In the bottom of the sixth inning PC’s Jesse Harmon lined a
two out triple to left center bringing home Booth, Craven,
and Robinson and extending the lead to 12-4.
PC tacked on their final two runs the next inning. Anders
scored from third on a passed ball after reaching earlier on
an error. Lyda then doubled for the third time in the game
and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The next at-bat
Robinson doubled to left center driving in the 14th run of
the game.
Harmon finished with four hits, three RBIs, and two runs
scored to lead the Blue Hose offensive attack. As a team, PC
finished with 15 hits with Lyda, Robinson, and Craven all
finishing with three hits each.
Eight different Blue Hose batters collected at least one RBI
with Anders tallying two.
Wingate designated hitter Josh Benton and shortstop Shaughn
Neal each collected three hits in the loss with Neal also
driving in a pair of runs.
Wingate starter Richard Allred was handed the loss after
surrendering nine runs on nine hits in his two and 2/3
innings of work.
PC will conclude their 2007 season on the road at 3 p.m. on
Tuesday, April 17 against Augusta State.
