Camp Bentley:
Day 8
CLINTON, S.C. –
Presbyterian College football concluded its second day of
two practices on Monday.
The Blue Hose
practiced around two hours in the morning, focusing mainly
on special teams once again in the morning practice.
Monday’s evening
practice was PC’s 10th practice of the preseason.
Entering the
second week of camp, PC head football coach Bobby Bentley
has for the most part been pleased with the efforts of his
team, noting that the only real negative at this point in
time is the injuries that have plagued the team during the
first week of camp, which includes the loss of running back
Mario Carter (Columbia, S.C.) to a season-ending knee
injury.
The Blue Hose
will hold their second scrimmage of the preseason at 4 p.m.
on Tuesday at Bailey Memorial Stadium.
All PC practices,
including Tuesday’s scrimmage, are open to the public.
Noting Camp Bentley…
POSITIVE: After
one week of practice, Bentley chose to focus on some of his
players when talking about the positives after one week of
practice. On offense, Bentley specifically began with the
efforts of running back S.J. Worrell (Madison, Ga.), who has
been impressive all preseason. Bentley also noted the play
of the offensive line that has had to deal with two key
returners out with injuries in Jeff Hallen (Walton, Ga.) and
Joey Orck (Columbia, S.C.). He also said that the receiving
corps has improved exponentially from the outset of camp. On
defense, Bentley talked about how much better the secondary
has been playing. He also noted the leadership that nose
guard David Dunagan (Gainesville, Ga.) has been displaying.
THAT IS SPECIAL:
Bentley said that on special teams he has been increasingly
impressed with the play of punter Bryson Summers, saying
that he has punted well all preseason.
STAR OF THE DAY:
Bentley noted that PC freshman quarterback Brandon Miley has
looked good in the first week of preseason practice, noting
“he is continuing to move up the depth chart and that he
will continue to exchange reps with No. 2 quarterback Tim
Webb (Lugoff, S.C.).
Miley was a
Shrine Bowl player last year for North Carolina. A native of
Hoggard, N.C. (J.T. Hoggard High School), Miley was his
region’s player of the year last season. Miley threw for 29
touchdowns and 2,615 yards last season to conclude his
career with over 6,000 yards passing.
PICTURE THIS: The
Blue Hose had their annual picture day on Sunday at Bailey
Memorial Stadium. PC’s current 90-man roster posed for a
team picture and took shots with their individual position
coaches. Each Blue Hose also took an individual shot that
will be included in the 2007 PC Football GameDay program.
DAY-BY-DAY: The
Blue Hose will practice 14 more times before beginning their
first week of game preparation on Monday, Aug. 27. In total,
PC will have 18 more practices before taking the gridiron
against Furman at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1 at Paladin
Stadium.
Interview
With Phil Magdic
PC assistant head
coach/linebackers coach Phil Magdic arrived at Presbyterian
College charged with the mission of bringing the play of the
Blue Hose linebacking corps up to the high standards set by
head coach Bobby Bentley.
Coach Magdic
feels that goal is within his reach.
“We have a tough
task ahead of us, facing Furman on Sept. 1” noted Magdic,
“We are getting there though by focusing on refining the
little things.”
According to
Magdic the progress of the unit is due in large part to the
increased leadership role of junior linebacker Antwan Thomas
(Hawkinsville, S.C.).
“Antwan has
accepted the challenge of becoming more of a team leader. He
is more vocal in controlling the defense and getting guys in
their spots.”
Among the young
players that have taken the lead of Thomas are sophomore
Chris Bowman (Conway, S.C.), and Brian Leonardi (Aiken,
S.C.).
Magdic remarked
that, “both of these young guys have begun to distinguish
themselves with their hard work and aggressive play.”
Below is the
continuation of our special focus on PC student-athletes
entitled Getting To Know The Blue Hose. This
installment focuses on PC linebacker Chris Bowman, who is
expected to figure prominently in the 2007 Blue Hose
defense.
