2000-01 Daktronics South Atlantic Men’s All-Region Teams
Presbyterian College’s Humphries & Rayford 
named to second team

CLINTON, SC — The 2000-01 Daktronics South Atlantic NCAA Division II All-Region teams were announced today. The South Atlantic Region was loaded with exceptional talent this season as is evident in one of the closest voting in recent memory.

Only four members of the 11-member All-region teams are particpating in this weekend’s NCAA South Atlantic Regional, a sign of how deep the talent pool is in this region.

Two selections that will play this weekend are on the first team. Leading the way is Djuan Hankins (Wingate University) and Wylie Petty (J.C. Smith University). Rounding out the first team was Jimmy Boston (North Carolina Central University), Daniel Willis (Lenoir-Rhyne College), and Ronald Murray (Shaw University).

Presbyterian College was well represented on the second team with 
D. J. Humphries
(Union, SC) and Chuck Rayford (Greenville, SC). Joining the Blue Hose duo on the second team was Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Robert Campbell (Armstrong Atlantic State University), Kyle Gribble (Carson-Newman College), Koran Goodwin (University of North Florida), Antoine Sims (J.C. Smith University).

Humphries, a 6-6 senior forward from Union, SC finished his career in a Blue Hose uniform as the South Atlantic Conference’s third-best rebounder in league history with  792 career rebounds. In addition, the former Union High School standout, ranks in the following SAC career categories: 2nd — offensive rebounds (256), 2nd — free throws attempted (500), and 8th — free throws made (309). Humphries was also named to the SAC All-Conference second team this season which marks the second straight year he has earned this honor.

This season, Humphries finished third in the SAC in rebounds (6.9) and ranked second on the team in scoring (11.6).

 

Rayford, a 6-0 sophomore guard from Greenville, SC led the team in scoring (16.7), assists (3.1), steals (1.9), and was fourth on the team in field goal percentage (44.0%). Rayford, the 1999-2000 SAC Freshman of the Year, was named to the first team All-SAC and earned SAC Player of the Week honors once this season.

This season, Rayford, a former Greenville High School standout, finished third in the SAC in scoring, 7th in steals, 9th in three-point field goal percentage (36.9%), and 7th in assists.

Presbyterian and J.C. Smith were the only two schools with multiple selections.

Hankins, a 6-1 sophomore guard from Roanoke, VA, led the Wingate University Bulldogs to a 24-4 overall record and a tie for first place in the South Atlantic Conference. In addition, Hankins was named first team All-SAC and SAC All-Tournament after averaging 18.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and shooting 49.5% from the field.

Petty, a 6-5 senior forward from Boiling Springs, NC, led the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University to a 25-4 overall record and the Western Division crown of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the CIAA Tournament title. Petty earned first team All-CIAA honors and was named to the CIAA All-Tournament team after averaging 22.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, while shooting 50.0% from the field and 77.0% from the charity stripe.

Boston, a 6-7 senior center from Washington, NC earned first team CIAA All-Conference honors. Boston posted 12 double-doubles (pts-rebs) this season in 24 games played and is currently ninth in program history with 1,376 career points. He averaged 18.8 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.2 blocks while shooting 53.8% from the field and 69.4% from the free throw line.

Willis, a 6-4 senior guard from Hickory, NC, led the Bears and the South Atlantic Conference in scoring at 24.4 points a game this season en route to SAC Player of the Year honors. Willis was named to the first team All-SAC and became the league’s all-time leading scorer with 1,980 career points which is second in Lenoir-Rhyne history.

Murray, a 6-4 junior guard from Philadelphia, PA, led the Bears to a runner-up finish in the Eastern Division of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season. Murray was named to the All-CIAA first team and to the CIAA All-Tournament team as well. He averaged 21.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.6 assists while shooting 45.1% from the field, 25.2% from three-point land, and 772.2% from the free throw line.

All five members of the first team will go on to the Daktronics All-American ballot which will be announced later this month. The following is the 2000-01 Daktronics South Atlantic All-Region first and second teams:
