HOSE SLIP PAST INDIANS 66-61 FOR PC' SENIOR NIGHT CLINTON, SC - Presbyterian's sophomore guard Chuck Rayford (Greenville, SC) scored a team-high 28 points to lead the Blue Hose past Newberry College 66-61 in men's South Atlantic Conference basketball action Saturday night. The game opened with both teams exchanging leads in the first half until the :17 mark when Rayford's jumper gave PC a 28-26 lead going into intermission. Neither team shot well in the first half as PC shot 39.1% while the Indians better that number by shooting 40.0%. After Newberry opened the second half with a 8-3 run to take a 34-31 lead at the 17:45 mark. Presbyterian fought back and the lead was exchanged four more times in the second frame until the 10:36 mark when a dunk by PC's senior forward D.J. Humphries gave the Blue Hose a 45-43 lead. PC would not surrender the lead for the rest of the game, but Newberry was able to cut the lead to three at 62-59 with :49 seconds remaining. PC made four free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the win. Tonight's game was Senior Night for Presbyterian College basketball players Humphries and guard Kevin Campbell. This duo helped lead PC to a 65-46 overall record in three-plus seasons and extended their program's top three finish in the SAC regular season to six straight and for the tenth time in the 12 year history of the all-sports league. PC was led tonight by Rayford's 28 points and Humphries who added 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore center Rod Isom (Anderson, SC) added 12 points and eight rebounds. Newberry was led by senior guard Derrick Durham (Simpsonville, SC) who scored a game-high 29 points and added four rebounds while junior forward Alex Fair (Kershaw, SC) came off the bench to pull down a game-high 10 rebounds. Presbyterian improves to 17-9 overall and 10-4 in the SAC while Newberry falls to 8-18 overall, 4-10 in the SAC. These two teams will return to action back in the Ross E. Templeton Center this coming Tuesday, February 27 as the Blue Hose will host a first round game of the Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference Tournament. PC will be seeded #3 and the Indians will be seeded #6. |
