WINS 84-73 OVER NEWBERRY IN
FIRST GAME OF SAC/PBC CLASH
Landers Smith leads five Senators in double figures
CLINTON,
SC Landers sophomore center Matt Smith (Sale, Australia) scored a team-high 18 points with eight
blocks to lead the Senators to an 84-73 win over Newberry
College in the first game of the 4th Annual South Atlantic
Conference/Peach Belt Conference Clash Friday night.
Lander was redhot from the
outside in the first half, hitting nine-of-17 three-pointers
to go ahead 49-35 at the half. Newberry would not be outdone,
hitting on seven-of-10 three pointers in the first frame as
well.
The Senators didnt let
up, hitting four-of-nine from deep in the second half and
Smith controlled the game with his 18 points for a deadly
inside out combo. Lander led by as many as 19 points (60-41)
with 15:39 remaining but the Indians cut the lead 11 points at
80-69 with 3:57 remaining. Newberry could not get any closer
as the Senators iced the game down the stretch by eating up
the clock.
Newberry was led by
freshman guard Bryan
Reese (Goose Creek, SC) who had 18 points and led three
other Indians in double figures. Joining Reese was junior
forward Alex Fair (Kershaw,
SC) with 17 points, and junior forward Albert
Garrett (Laurens, SC) and senior guard Derrick
Durham (Simpsonville, SC) each added 13 points.
Lander was led by senior
guard Lloyd Wilson (Indiantown,
FL) and senior guard Travis
Lane (Sydney, Australia) who each added 15 points, while
sophomore guard Reggie Lewis (Sneads, FL) scored 12 points and junior guard Victor
Sulton (Little Mountain, SC) chipped in 10 points.
Lander improves to 2-2
while Newberry falls to 1-3 on the season.
The Senators will return to
action tomorrow when they take on host Presbyterian College at
8:00 pm while Newberry will play USC Aiken.
