Sports Information Directors Select
2001-02 Daktronics South Atlantic Men’s All-Region Teams
CLINTON, SC — The 2001-02 Daktronics South Atlantic NCAA Division
II All-Region teams was announced today. The South Atlantic
Region was loaded with exceptional talent this season as is
evident in one of the closest voting in recent memory.
Six members
of the 10-member All-region teams are participating in this
weekend’s NCAA South Atlantic Regional, a sign of how deep
the talent pool is in this region. Each of the three
conferences in the South Atlantic Region was well represented
on the all-region teams. The Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (CIAA) had five selections, the Peach Belt
Conference (PBC) had three, and the South Atlantic Conference
(SAC) had two selections.
Four
selections that will play this weekend are on the first team.
Leading the way is Kyle
Gribble (Carson-Newman College), Lorniza
Harrington (Wingate University), Ronald
Murray (Shaw University), and Antoine
Sims (J.C. Smith University). Rounding out the first team
was Clint Keown (USC Aiken).
Augusta
State University’s Gary
Boodnikoff and Shaw University’s Steve
Bynes will also participate this weekend in the South
Atlantic Regional were named to the second team. Joining
Boodnikoff and Bynes on the second team were Rodney
Keener (Georgia College & State University), Lavar
Griffin (Virginia State University), and Tim
Washington (Bowie State University).
Gribble, a
6-3 junior guard from Sparta, Tenn., led the Carson-Newman
College Eagles to a 25-4 overall record, the South Atlantic
Conference regular season and tournament titles, and a #18
national ranking. The Eagles are the #1 seed and will host the
upcoming South Atlantic Regional. He has led the Eagles to the
nation’s longest consecutive game winning streak in NCAA
Division this season at 18 games. In addition, Gribble was
named first team All-SAC and SAC Tournament MVP after
averaging 16.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and shooting
54.7% from the field, 47.4% from three-point range, and 71.0%
from the free throw line. Gribble earned second team
Daktronics All-Region honors last season.
Harrington,
a 6-4 senior guard from Wagram, NC, led the Bulldogs of
Wingate University to a 26-6 overall record, second place in
the SAC regular season and runner-up for the Food Lion/SAC
Tournament title, and a #23 national ranking. Harrington led
his team to the upcoming NCAA Division II South Atlantic
Regional while earning SAC Player of the Year, first team
All-SAC honors and was named to the SAC All-Tournament team.
He is averaging 14.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 3.4
steals while shooting 51.1% from the field, 35.6% from
three-point land, and 73.9% from the charity stripe.
Keown, a 6-2
senior guard from Evansville, Ind., earned first team Peach
Belt All-Conference honors. Keown leads the Peach Belt
Conference and is third in the nation in scoring at 24.7
points per game. In addition, he leads the conference in
steals and free throw percentage. He averaged 24.7 points, 5.0
rebounds, 2.8 steals while shooting 39.5% from the field,
37.0% from three-point land, and 87.2% from the free throw
line. He set a pair of Peach Belt Conference Tournament
single-game records with 42 points on 10 made three-pointers
in a 92-91 overtime win over the University of North Florida.
Murray, a
6-4 senior guard from Philadelphia, PA, led the Shaw
University Bears to a share of the CIAA Eastern Division
crown, the CIAA Tournament title, a trip to the NCAA Division
II South Atlantic Regional, and a #15 national ranking. Murray
was named the CIAA Player of the Year this season and was
selected to the All-CIAA first team and was the CIAA
Tournament MVP as well. He averaged 23.9 points, 6.4 rebounds,
6.0 assists while shooting 49.1% from the field, 35.0% from
three-point land, and 77.3% from the free throw line. Murray
is the only returning member from last year’s Daktronics
All-Region first team.
Sims, a 5-10
senior guard from Buffalo, New York, led the Johnson C. Smith
University Golden Bulls to the CIAA Western Division crown, a
runner-up finish for the CIAA Tournament title, and a return
trip to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional. Sims led
the Golden Bulls to a trip to the Elite Eight last season. He
earned CIAA All-Conference honors and was named to the CIAA
All-Tournament team. Sims was a member of the Daktronics
All-Region second team last season. He averaged 21.0 points,
2.0 rebounds, 2.4 steals while shooting 42.5% from the field,
39.7% from three-point land, and 76.1% from the free throw
line.
All five
members of the first team will go on to the Daktronics
All-American ballot that will be announced later this month.
