2001-02 SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE MEN'S AND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS AND AWARD RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED

HICKORY, NC – The 2001-2002 South Atlantic Conference men’s and women’s basketball All-Conference teams and award recipients were announced during the tournament basketball awards and Hall of Fame induction banquet Thursday night at the Catawba Valley Community College Arena in Hickory, N.C.

Approximately 300 players, coaches, media, support staff and special guests attended this year’s function, which tips off the final rounds of the tournament, to be played Friday and Saturday, March 1-2, in the CVCC Multipurpose Facility. As part of the festivities, six new members were inducted into The South Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame.

Dale Clayton, who guided the Carson-Newman Eagles to their first conference championship since 1991, was named Men’s Coach of the Year. He wins the award for the second time in his 13-year career.

Wingate University’s Lorinza Harrington was named Men’s Player of the Year. He led the SAC in assists and steals, ranked among the league leaders in four other statistical categories. He was named conference Player of the Week four times.

The men’s Freshman of the Year is Lenoir-Rhyne College forward Roman Davis. Davis, out of South Stokes High School in Walnut Cove, N.C., was a key player on a Bears team that finished in a tie for fourth place in the conference. He averaged 10.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, while shooting nearly 54 percent from the floor.

The SAC  Scholar Athlete Awards went to Jerome Ramsey of Mars Hill College.

Ramsey is a two-year lettermen for the Lions. This year he averaged nearly 9 points per game and led the team in 3-pointers. He scored a season-high 20 points twice. Ramsey has a 3.87 GPA as a Math Education major and has been a member of the Dean’s List three times. In the community, Ramsey has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, and is active in the United Baptist Church Youth Group, where he has worked with mission trips and teaching Bible school. He also volunteers at various youth basketball camps.

   The SAC Scholar Athlete Award is presented to one athlete from each of the SAC's 14 sports programs and represents a combination of athletic s  kill, academic achievement, and participation in community service anleadership roles.

Numerous players were presented with the SAC Senior Participant Award, given to players who are competing in their final season of SAC play, and the Statistical Champion Award, presented to players and teams leading the SAC in various statistical categories at the end of the regular season.  

The South Atlantic Conference also added six members to its Hall of Fame.  The new members are: Charlie Coles, a former SAC Football Defensive Player of the Year at Newberry College; Ann Hancock, the second-leading all-time scorer in women’s basketball from Wingate University; Bill Morningstar, a successful golf, basketball and cross country coach from former SAC member Elon University; Tom Parham, also from Elon, who guided the men’s tennis team to eight SAC championships and three national championships; Allen Morris, a 1956 graduate of Presbyterian College who was an outstanding tennis player and later served as Director of Athletics at PC from 1994-2000; and Mars Hill College basketball standout Susie Hopson Shelton, a former SAC Freshman of the Year, Player of the Year and All-American.
