RAYFORD EARNS SECOND STRAIGHT TEAM MVP HONORS
AT
THE BLUE HOSE MEN’S BASKETBALL ANNUAL BANQUET
CLINTON, S.C. — Presbyterian
College’s Chuck
Rayford (Greenville, SC) was honored as the
men’s basketball team’s Most Valuable Player at the
program’s annual banquet held Friday night.
Rayford,
a 6-0, 170-pound junior guard, earned second team
All-South Atlantic Conference (SAC) honors after leading
the team in scoring (17.4). He earns this honor for the
second straight year while averaging 3.4 rebounds and
1.0 steals while shooting 32.5% from three-point range.
Rayford, one of four team captains, also was named
Pepsi/SAC Player of the Week once during the season.
Rayford ranked in several statistical categories in the
league leading the league in scoring, free throw
percentage (82.4%), ranking 12th in field goal
percentage (45.9%), tied for 12th in made three-pointers
per game (1.39), and 13th in assists (2.43).
During
the season, Rayford became the 12th player under head
coach Gregg
Nibert’s tenure to reach the 1,000-point
plateau. He finished the season with 1,368 career points
which ranks second among 1,000-point scorers during
Nibert’s 13-year tenure, 215 points behind former Blue
Hose All-American, Bret Jones for first place.

Nibert cited 13 players as letterwinners for the
2001-02 season. Presbyterian compiled a 12-16 record including a 4-10 ledger
in the South Atlantic Conference, good for a sixth place
finish. In addition, the Blue Hose lost in the
semifinals of the Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference
Tournament. The Blue Hose played the majority of the
season with a depleted roster as the team suffered three
season-ending knee injuries to key players. Other Blue

Adams (Columbia,
S.C.), a 6-4, 175-pound sophomore guard, missed the
2001-02 season due to a knee injury.
Davis (Charlotte,
N.C.), a 6-9, 210-pound junior center, posted
career-best statistics this season after averaging 3.6
points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.1 blocks. Davis, who played in
all 28 games with nine starting assignments, shot 40.0%
from the field and 58.3% from the free throw line. He
led the team in blocks (31) and ranked sixth in the SAC
this season in that category.
Dellinger (Mauertown,
Va.) a 5-11, 155-pound sophomore guard, played in all 28
games with 10 starting assignments this season. He
averaged 7.9 points, 1.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists while
shooting 46.3% from the field, 43.8% from three-point
range, and 89.2% from the free throw line, which led the
team. In the classroom, Dellinger has a 3.70 GPA. In the
final SAC statistics, Dellinger ranked third in
three-point field goal percentage, and tied for 12th in
made three-pointers per game (1.39).
Isom (Anderson,
S.C.), a 6-7, 225-pound junior forward/center, played in
and started all 28 games this season. Isom had another
solid season, leading the team and ranking third in the
SAC in field goal percentage (55.2%). He averaged 12.8
points, 5.8 rebounds while shooting 79.1% from the free
throw line. In addition, Isom ranked in several
statistical categories in the league including fourth in
free throw percentage, seventh in offensive rebounds
(2.14), ninth
in rebounds, 11th in scoring, and 12th in defensive
rebounds (3.61). Isom was also named to the SAC
All-Conference second team.
Scully (Dunwoody,
Ga.), a 6-0, 175-pound sophomore guard, played in all 28
games with 16 starting assignments this season. He led
the team in assists (3.11) while averaging 4.0 points,
2.1 rebounds, and 1.0 steals while shooting 38.9% from
the field, 35.0% from three-point range, and 58.0% from
the free throw line. In the classroom, Scully has a 3.70
GPA. In the final SAC statistics, Scully ranked third in
assist-to-turnover ratio (1.93:1), and eighth in
assists.
Stamps (Marion,
S.C.) a 6-3, 200-pound junior forward, played in 18
games with 10 starting assignments before being lost for
the rest of the season due to a knee injury. Prior to
the injury, Stamps averaged 5.6 points, 4.1 rebounds,
1.1 assists while shooting 46.9% from the field, 37.5%
from three-point field goal land, and 57.6% from the
free throw line.
Welch (Suwanee,
Ga.), a 6-9, 230-pound freshman center missed the entire
2001-02 season with a knee injury.
Whittle
(Strasburg, VA), a 6-5, 195-pound junior forward,
played in 28 games with 27 starting assignments this
season. Whittle led the team in made three-pointers (55)
while finishing fourth in three-point field goal
percentage (37.4%). He averaged 11.0 points, 1.1
assists, 5.1 rebounds while shooting 40.3% from the
field and 76.9% from the free throw line. Whittle ranked
fifth in the SAC in free throw percentage, seventh in
made three-pointers per game (1.96), ninth in
three-point field goal percentage, 10th in defensive
rebounds (3.86), 14th
in scoring, and 15th in rebounding.
