BLUE HOSE SLIP PAST PIRATES 66-57 IN 2001-02 SEASON OPENER
PC’s Isom leads three in double figures with 17 points & 10 rebounds

CLINTON, SC — Presbyterian College junior center Rod Isom (Anderson, SC) scored a game-high 17 points along with 10 rebounds to lead the Blue Hose to a 66-57 win over Armstrong Atlantic State University in men’s basketball action Saturday night.

The game was the 2001-02 season opener for both teams as Presbyterian held off a late rally by the Pirates to pull out the win.

Armstrong Atlantic opened the game redhot from the field hitting their first three three-point field goals and going out to a 23-14 lead at the 11:03 mark of the first half. The Pirates pushed the lead to double figures (29-19) with 8:03 remaining, but they could not put the Blue Hose away. PC closed the half on a 14-4 run and tied the game at 33-33 on a layup as time expired by junior guard Chuck Rayford (Greenville, SC).

Both teams shot well in the first half as Armstrong hit 14-of-27 field goals, good for 51.9% while Presbyterian was 12-of-26, good for 46.2%.

The second half opened with PC taking their first lead of the game at 36-33 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Matt Scully (Dunwoody, GA). The Blue Hose controlled the game in the second half giving up the lead only once and pushed their advantage to double figures at 54-44 with 5:47 left.

PC held the double figure lead down the stretch until under a minute when the Pirates hit back-to-back three-pointers by junior guard Brian Hobbs (Loganville, GA) and senior guard Mick Jordan (Sarasota, FL) to cut the lead to 64-55 with :45 remaining. PC iced the game away on free throws by Scully and Isom to secure the win.

The Blue Hose were led by Rayford who tallied 14 points and six rebounds  while junior forward Jeff Whittle (Strasburg, VA) added 12 points and five rebounds.

The Pirates were led by Jordan who tallied 15 points and three steals while junior guard Dave Pisarick (Brook Park, OH) and senior center Bart Westgeest (Wassenaar, The Netherlands) each added 11 points. Rounding out the double figure scorers for Armstrong Atlantic was senior forward Williard Winn (Brunswick, MO) who added 10 points, five rebounds, and three blocks.

Presbyterian improves to 1-0 on the season while Armstrong Atlantic falls to 0-1.
