CARSON-NEWMAN HOLDS OFF BLUE HOSE FOR A 69-59 WIN IN SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE MEN’S BASKETBALL ACTION

CLINTON, SC — Carson-Newman College’s senior forward Kyle Gribble (Sparta, TN) scored 16 points to lead five players in double figures as the Eagles defeated Presbyterian College 69-59 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action.

The Eagles led 32-26 at halftime after hitting seven-of-17 three-pointers in the first half led by Gribble who connected on three-of-five for nine points. The Blue Hose shot well in the first half, hitting 11-of-24 field goals for 45.8%, but turned the ball over 10 times.

The second half started with the Eagles going on a 14-2 run to take a 46-34 lead at  the 13:45 mark. Carson-Newman held the lead until late second half when the Blue Hose went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead 62-58 with 2:24 left in the game. The Eagles responded with a 7-1 run to end the game including hitting four free throws in the last :33 seconds.

The Eagles were led by junior guard Calvin Owen (Nashville, TN), junior center Dustin Edwards (Erwin, TN), and junior forward Lorenzo Davis (Bimini, Bahamas) each scored 11 points while sophomore forward Todd Lucas (Eustis, FL) added 10 points.

Presbyterian was led by junior center Rod Isom (Anderson, SC) who tallied 15 points and eight rebounds while junior forward Jeff Whittle (Strasburg, VA) added a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Carson-Newman improves to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the SAC while Presbyterian falls to 7-8 overall and 0-3 in the SAC.
