CATAWBA SHOOTS PAST BLUE HOSE 73-68
Indian’s Jernigan & Petty combine for 12 three-pointers in win

CLINTON, SC — Catawba College’s junior guard Kevin Petty (Sanford, NC) and sophomore guard Britt Jernigan (Albemarle, NC) each hit six three-pointers to lead the Indians to a 73-68 win over Presbyterian College in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action Wednesday night.

The Indian duo of Jernigan and Petty combined to shoot 12-of-15 from three point land and made half of Catawba’s 24 made field goals on the night. Petty led the way with a team-high 19 points while Jernigan came off the bench to score 18 points.

PC took an early 10-2 lead to open the game, but the Indians fought back and cut the lead to 19-14 at the 6:02 mark on a 17-4 run highlighted by a pair of three-pointers by Jernigan. After a Blue Hose run that pushed the lead back to double figures at 24-14 on a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Andrew Dellinger (Mauertown, VA). Catawba fought back and took their first lead of the game at 25-24 on a three-pointer by Petty with 1:25 left before halftime.

The Blue Hose ended the half on a 4-0 run by junior guard Chuck Rayford (Greenville, SC) to take a 28-25 lead into intermission.

The second half saw the Blue Hose push the lead to 32-25 to open the second half. Catawba fought back and tied the game at 47-47 with 8:25 left on a three-pointer by Jernigan. Catawba opened up a double digit lead at 66-56 at the 1:16 mark thanks in part to a 19-9 run. The Indians made eight free throws in the final minutes of the game to seal the win.

For the game, Catawba shot 41.4% from the field including 62.5% in the second half. PC shot 45.3% from the field and shot 50.0% in the second frame.

Presbyterian was led by Rayford’s game-high 20 points while junior center Rod Isom (Anderson, SC) added 15 points and six rebounds.

Petty added seven assists to his team-high 19 points while senior forward Brian Carter (Alexandria, VA) added six boards.

Catawba improves to 19-6 overall and 9-4 in the SAC while Presbyterian falls to 10-15 overall and 3-10 in league play.
