BLUE HOSE SHOOT PAST INDIANS 77-60 IN SAC MEN’S BASKETBALL ACTION
PC’s Whittle goes for a career-high 21 points in Blue Hose victory

CLINTON, SC — Presbyterian College junior forward Jeff Whittle (Strasburg, VA) scored a career-high 21 points with 10 rebounds to lead the Blue Hose to a 77-60 win over Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Hose, who dressed only eight players due to injury today, shot 51.1% from the field as a team for the game including eight-of-16 from three-point land.

Newberry took an early 5-0 lead to open the game, but PC used a 11-6 run to tie the game at 11-11 with 14:31 left first half. The game went back and forth the rest of the half as PC took a 28-22 lead with 6:42 remaining. The Indians fought back with a 8-2 run the next four minutes to retake the lead at 30-28 with 2:54 left first half. The team exchanged baskets and the game was tied at intermission 35-35.

Presbyterian shot 52.4% in the first half as opposed to Newberry who shot 45.2% and dominated the boards to the tune of a 21-9 advantage. Senior forward Alex Fair (Kershaw, SC) led the Indians with 12 first half points while PC’s junior guard Chuck Rayford (Greenville, SC) countered with 12 points.

The Blue Hose jumped out to a 13-point lead (56-43) at the 8:23 mark after going on a 21-8 run to open the second half. PC held the lead for the rest of the game and pushed the lead to it’s biggest total, 17 points, at 77-60 as time expired.

Presbyterian was led by Whittle’s career-high 21 points while Rayford added 22 points and four assists. Sophomore guard Willie Brown (Greenville, SC) sparked PC with a career-high 11 points to go along with three assists.

Newberry was led by Fair’s 20 points and eight rebounds while senior center Theron Chandler (Columbia, SC) added 11 points five rebounds.

The Indians struggled from the field second half, hitting only 37.0% including two-of-nine from three-point land. Newberry held the rebound advantage at 34-32, but were outrebounded 24-13 by the Blue Hose.

The Blue Hose improve to 9-10 overall and 2-5 in the SAC while Newberry falls to 2-16 overall and 0-7 in the league.
