BLUE HOSE MEN’S BASKETBALL FINISHES FIFTH AT 6TH ANNUAL DISNEY DIVISION II TIP OFF CLASSIC
PC’s Rayford named to Disney Classic All-Tournament Team
 

CLINTON, S.C. — Presbyterian College men’s basketball (2-1) opened the 2002-03 season with an impressive fifth place showing at the 6th annual Disney Division II Tip Off Classic held in Orlando, Fla. over the weekend. 

 Fifth-Place Game (Sunday, Nov. 17): Presbyterian 61,
#6 California PA 56 (OT)

The Blue Hose defeated preseason #6 ranked California University of Pennsylvania 61-56 in overtime on Sunday to secure fifth place in the tournament. PC’s senior guard Chuck Rayford (Greenville, S.C.) led the way for the Blue Hose with a game-high 19 points on six-of-six shooting from the line. PC led 32-22 at the half, only to see the Vulcans outscore the Blue Hose 28-18 in the second half to force overtime. PC outscored California PA 11-6 in the extra period highlighted by Rayford’s six points. Freshman forward Michael Drum (Rural Hall, N.C.) added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Hose who outrebounded the Vulcans 37-30 for the game.

Opening Round Game (Friday, Nov. 15): Henderson State 62, Presbyterian 48

Henderson State’s sophomore guard and Disney Tournament MVP, Tarvoris Uzoigwe scored 23 points to led the Reddies to a 62-48 win over Presbyterian College in the first round of the Disney Classic. The Blue Hose led 20-17 at halftime as PC held the Reddies to 22.6% shooting from the field in the first half. Henderson State, the eventual Disney champion, got on track in the second half and outscored the Blue Hose 45-28 and outrebounded PC for the game 29-24. Rayford led the Blue Hose with 11 points and five rebounds. Junior guard Andrew Dellinger (Mauertown, Va.) added nine points coming off the bench.

Second Round Game (Saturday, Nov. 16): Presbyterian 84, Bellarmine University 74

PC’s senior center Rod Isom (Anderson, S.C.) led three players in double figures with a team-high 19 points and added four rebounds as the Blue Hose bounced back for a 84-74 win over Bellarmine University on Saturday. PC led 46-38 at halftime after shooting 59.4% from the field in the first half. Isom had 11 points in the first half on five-of-eight shooting from the field. Rayford added 17 points while freshman guard Tray Ballenger (Wellford, S.C.) added 12 points and five rebounds coming off the bench. For the game, the Blue Hose dominated the boards (35-23) including 10 offensive rebounds and shot 58.9% from the field. 

For the tournament, Rayford averaged 15.7 points, 3.0 rebounds while shooting 47.0% from the field and 85.7% from the free throw line en route to Disney All-Tournament honors.
