COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL RELEASES 2002-03 SCHEDULE
14 Home dates and a trip to Orlando highlight Blue Hose schedule
CLINTON, S.C. — Fourteen
home dates and a trip to Orlando, Fla. highlight the 2002-03
Presbyterian College 30-game regular season men’s basketball schedule
announced today by 14th-year head coach Gregg
Nibert.
The
Blue Hose are coming off last season’s 12-16 campaign, which included
a semifinal appearance in the Food Lion/SAC Tournament.
Presbyterian
will open the season with an exhibition game versus the Columbia
Sharkheads on November 9 before officially beginning the 2002-03 slate
in Orlando, Fla. on November 14-17 as they participate in the 2002
Disney NCAA Division II Tip-Off Classic. The tournament will begin with
a matchup against Henderson State University out of the Gulf South
Conference. The Reddies return three starters from last year’s 21-7
team which advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Blue Hose
continue on the road with a stop in Newberry, S.C. to participate in the
SAC/Peach Belt Clash on Nov. 22-23. The month of November finishes up
with PC’s first home game on November 26 versus Allen University
followed by a trip to Raleigh, N.C. to take on NCAA Division II
semifinalist, Shaw University on November 30th.
During
December, the Blue Hose face Benedict College (12/3) on the road,
followed by a home game against Anderson College (12/5), and a road trip
to Winchester, Va. to take on Shenandoah University (12/7). PC will
travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC Spartanburg on December 9
followed by three straight home games against Lander University (12/12),
Armstrong Atlantic State University (12/14), and North Greenville
College (12/21).
The
Blue Hose take on Erskine College at home on January 4 before opening
South Atlantic Conference play on January 11 against Tusculum College.
Wingate University comes to town on Jan. 15, followed by a pair of road
games versus defending SAC Champion, Carson-Newman College (1/18) and
Mars Hill College (1/22). PC returns home for a pair of SAC games versus
Lenoir-Rhyne College (1/25) and Catawba College (1/29) to end the month.
The
Blue Hose open February with four straight road games versus Newberry
College (2/1), non-conference opponent, North Greenville College (2/3),
Tusculum College (2/8), and Wingate University (2/12). PC returns home
to host Carson-Newman College (2/15) and Mars Hill College (2/19) before
returning to the road for their final conference road trip with matchups
against Lenoir-Rhyne College (2/22) and Catawba College (2/26). PC hosts
instate-rival Newberry College on March 1 in the regular season finale.
The top
four seeds will host the opening round games of the 2002-03 South
Atlantic Conference Tournament on March 5 while the final four will
return to Hickory, NC on the campus of the Catawba Valley Community
College for the fourth year in a row on March 8-9.
“I am
very excited about this season’s schedule,” said Nibert. “This
schedule is the toughest were have ever played and I feel it will be a
great test for our veteran team.”
Led by
Nibert, who owns a 221-155 career record in 13 seasons with the Blue
Hose, PC returns nine letterwinners and all five starters from a year
ago.
The Blue Hose are led by
All-SAC performers, senior guard Chuck Rayford and senior forward Rod Isom. Rayford averaged 17.4 points
and shot 82.4% from the free throw line, while Isom averaged 12.8 points
and 5.8 rebounds. Joining Rayford and Isom is returning starters senior
forward Jeff Whittle (11.0 ppg, 5.1 rpg),
senior center Preston
Davis (3.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg), and junior guard Matt
Scully (2.5 ppg, 3.1 apg).
