HERREN
& KOPPEL SIGN WITH BLUE HOSE MEN’S BASKETBALL
CLINTON,
S.C. — Grant Herren
and Ryan Koppel have signed national letters of intent to play men’s
basketball at Presbyterian College announced today by
head coach Gregg
Nibert.
Herren,
a 6-7, 215-pound forward/center from Oviedo, Fla. plays
for Oviedo High School and head coach Ed
Kershner. He averaged 17.9 points, 8.0 rebounds as a
senior while leading his 6A high school to a 24-8
overall record and the second round of the state
playoffs.
Individually,
Herren as was Seminole County Player of the Year,
Sentinel All-Central Florida second team and finished
fifth among 6A seniors in the state player of the year
balloting. In addition, he has been selected to play in
the Florida East-West All-Star Game.
“We
are very excited to get a player and student out of
Oviedo High School,” said Nibert. “Grant is an
exciting player that will make an immediate impact both
on the court and in the classroom.”
Koppel,
a 6-6, 210-pound wing from Ashburn, Va. plays for Broad
Run High School and head coach Larry
Bloomer. He averaged 21.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and
shot 79.5% from the free throw line as a senior en route
to earning first team All-District and All-Region
honors. In addition, Koppel was named 2003 District
Player of the Year and to the Washington Post All-Metro Honorable Mention team.
“Ryan
will make a great addition to our program,” said
Nibert. “He is a great shooter with the ability to
score and is a tremendous student in the classroom.”
Herren
and Koppel become the second and third signees for the
Blue Hose this academic year. In November, Sean
Dixon of Kennesaw, Ga. signed with PC.
Presbyterian
College compiled a program-record tying 27 wins against
nine losses this past season including a 9-5 ledger in
the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), good for a fourth
place finish. In addition, the Blue Hose finished
runner-up for the Food Lion/SAC Tournament and received
an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II National
Tournament. In the NCAA Division II South Atlantic
Regional, the Blue Hose defeated #13 Columbus State
University (71-59) and Shaw University (77-58) before
losing to #10 Bowie State University (67-53) in the
region championship game, one win away from the Elite
Eight.
