BLUE HOSE SHAKE OFF COLD START TO DEFEAT BENEDICT 66-49 

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Presbyterian College men’s basketball team shook off a cold start to come-from-behind to defeat Benedict College 66-49 in non-conference action Tuesday night. 

The Benedict Tigers opened the game on a 15-3 run keyed by five points by junior guard Charles McFadden (St. Matthews, S.C. PC responded with a 15-6 run to cut the lead to 21-18 at the 6:11 mark on a layup by freshman forward Tray Ballenger (Wellford, S.C.). PC would not get any closer before intermission as the Tigers outscored the Blue Hose 10-6 down the stretch to take a 31-24 lead into halftime. 

The second half was a different story as the Blue Hose used a 8-3 run to open the second frame and tie the game at 34-34 at the 16:51 mark on a jumper by freshman forward Michael Drum (Rural Hall, N.C.). Drum would hit his second straight basket moments later to give PC their first lead (36-34) of the game. 

The Blue Hose took control of the game from that point and outscored the Tigers 42-18 in the second half and held Benedict to 20.0% shooting from the field while forcing seven turnovers. PC shook off their 30.8% shooting in the first half by shooting 65.0% from the field after halftime and finished the game shooting 45.7%. PC pushed the lead to as many as 18 points (66-48) on a free throw by senior center Rod Isom (Anderson, S.C.) with :55 seconds remaining in the game. 

Junior guard Matt Scully (Dunwoody, Ga.) keyed the second half surge for the Blue Hose and finished the game with nine points and seven assists while hitting three-of-five from three-point land. Scully played 33 minutes on the night and turned the ball over only one time. Senior guard Chuck Rayford (Greenville, S.C.) led three Blue Hose players in double figures with 13 points followed by Drum with 11 points and Isom added 10 points and nine rebounds.  

Benedict was led by McFadden’s 12 points followed by junior guard Quentin McCombs (Greenville, S.C.) who added 11 points.  

Presbyterian improves to 6-2 on the season while Benedict falls to 1-3. The Blue Hose return to action on Thursday, December 5 as they host Anderson College at 7:00 pm. The Tigers also return to action on Thursday as they travel to Memphis, TN to take on Lemoyne Owens College at 8:00 pm.
