BLUE HOSE DEFEAT INDIANS 81-70
PC puts starting five in double
figures in victory over Catawba 

CLINTON, S.C. — Presbyterian College freshman forward Michael Drum (Rural Hall, N.C.) tallied a team-high 18 points to lead all five starters in double figures as the Blue Hose defeated Catawba College 81-70 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action Wednesday night. 

The Blue Hose improve to 17-4 overall and 4-2 in the SAC while the Indians fall to 7-12 overall and 2-4 in the league. 

Catawba opened the game on a 12-5 run as senior guard Kevin Petty (Sanford, N.C.) tallied five early points. PC responded with a 11-4 run over the next seven minutes and tied the game at 16-16 on a pair of free throws by Drum. The game stayed close for the rest of the first half until PC took the lead for good at 21-20 on a free throw by senior center Preston Davis (Charlotte, N.C.) at the 6:02 mark. PC held the lead for the rest of the first half and led 32-27 at intermission. 

The second half PC held a comfortable lead most of the way until the Indians trimmed the lead to 54-52 at the 6:51 mark on a free throw by freshman guard Jolly Manning (Rocky Mount, N.C.). PC responded with a 22-7 run over the next five minutes to extend the lead to 79-59 and put the game out of reach. Down the stretch the Blue Hose hit 10-of-11 free throws in the last five minutes to hold off a late Indian rally. 

For the game, Presbyterian hit 27-of-33 free throws and out rebounded the Indians 34-19, but Catawba forced 23 Blue Hose turnovers to keep the game close. 

Joining Drum for Blue Hose scoring honors was senior center Rod Isom (Anderson, S.C.) who tallied 13 points and seven rebounds, followed by senior guard Chuck Rayford (Greenville, S.C.) and senior forward JJeff Whittle (Strasburg, Va.) who each chipped in 11 points. Rounding out the double figure scorers for PC was freshman forward Tray Ballenger (Wellford, S.C.) who tallied 10 points and four rebounds. 

Catawba was led by junior guard Duke Phipps (Newport News, Va.) who tallied a game-high 23 points followed by senior forward Brian Carter (Alexandria, Va.) who chipped in 17 points. Rounding out the Indian’s double figure scorers was Petty who had 13 points.
