BLUE HOSE HOLD ON FOR A 68-56 VICTORY OVER INDIANS
PC’s Isom leads three Blue Hose in double figures on Senior Day 2003

CLINTON, S.C. — Presbyterian College senior center Rod Isom (Anderson, S.C.) led three Blue Hose in double figures with 17 points en route to a 68-56 victory over Newberry College Saturday afternoon in SAC men’s basketball action.

Today was Senior Day for the Blue Hose (23-7, 9-5 SAC) as the game marked the SAC regular season finale for both schools. Senior forward Jeff Whittle (Strasburg, Va.) reached a milestone today for the Blue Hose scoring his 1,000th career point, becoming the 13th player under PC head coach Gregg Nibert’s 14-year tenure.

The game opened with the Blue Hose taking an early 24-12 lead at the 7:17 mark highlighted by a pair of three-pointers by Whittle. Newberry would respond with a 13-0 in the next five minutes to retake the lead at 25-24 at the 2:14 mark of the half. Newberry’s junior guard Rashaad Carter (North Charleston, S.C.) keyed the run with six points. PC’s senior guard Chuck Rayford (Greenville, S.C.) scored five straight points followed by freshman forward Michael Drum’s (Rural Hall, N.C.) three-pointer with :08 seconds remaining gave the Blue Hose the lead at 32-27 entering intermission.

The second half saw PC push the lead to five points at 34-39 on a free throw by Isom at the 18:17 mark. Newberry responded with a 7-2 run to retake the lead at 40-36 left on a three-point play by Carter at the 13:17 mark. The Blue Hose responded with a 15-2 run over the next three minutes to retake the lead at 51-42 at the 9:09 mark. Once again Newberry (4-22, 1-13 SAC) responded and went on a 12-3 run and tied the game at 54-54 on a layup by Carter at the 4:44 mark. The Indians would not get any closer as the Blue Hose finished the game on a 14-2 run led by Isom’s eight points down the stretch.

Joining Isom for scoring honors was Whittle with 14 points and Drum with 11 points and six rebounds. PC forced the Indians into a season-high 26 turnovers on the night.

Newberry was led by Carter’s 23 points while sophomore forward Ben Hooker (Columbia, S.C.) added eight points and nine rebounds off the bench. The Indians now fall to 0-16 on the season when committing 15 or more turnovers.

The Blue Hose will host Tusculum College on Wednesday, March 4 at 7:00 pm in the first round of the Food Lion/SAC Tournament.
