BLUE HOSE
SLIP PAST CRUSADERS 61-57 IN MEN’S BASKETBALL ACTION
CLINTON,
SC – Presbyterian College sophomore forward Ryan
Koppel (Ashburn, VA) tallied a season-high 10 points
and seven boards to lead the Blue Hose to a 61-57 victory over
the Crusaders of North Greenville College in men’s college
basketball action Thursday night at the Ross E. Templeton
Center.
PC’s
sophomore guard Sean Dixon (Marietta,
GA) sealed the victory for the Blue Hose with a pair of free
throws with :04 seconds remaining in the game.
In the
first half, PC opened the game on a 5-0 run before North
Greenville came alive behind the play of sophomore guard P.J.
Schumacher (Waynesburg, PA) who hit a pair of
three-pointers, the second which tied the game at 11 with
10:45 remaining. The game stayed close down the stretch until
the Crusaders’ freshman guard Victor Duck (Taylors,
SC) scored on a pair of layups in the final :23 seconds to put
his team ahead 33-29 at intermission.
Schumacher
led all scorers in the first half with 11 points on
three-of-seven shooting from beyond arc as North Greenville
shot 50.0% from the field. PC was led by the play of junior
center Johann Collins (Raleigh,
NC) who tallied a team-high eight points and added three
boards.
The second
half saw the Crusaders push the lead to its largest margin of
six points at 38-32 at the 13:56 mark on a three-point field
goal by sophomore guard Jordan Richmond (Russellville,
AR). PC responded with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to
retake the lead for good at 39-38 on a layup by Dixon. PC
pushed the lead to as many as 10 points at 57-47 on a pair of
free throws by Dixon with :51 seconds remaining.
The
Crusaders hit a pair of three-pointers in the closing seconds,
the last by freshman guard Victor Duck (Taylors, SC) to
pull within two points at 59-57 with :06 seconds remaining.
Dixon’s free throws sealed the win for PC.
Dixon and
junior forward Tray Ballenger (Wellford,
SC) each scored 11 points for PC with Ballenger adding a
team-high eight boards. Collins chipped in 10 points and six
boards to round out the double figure scorers as the Blue Hose
improve to 5-3 on the season. North Greenville was led by
Schumacher’s game-high 18 points with only seven coming in
the second half. Duck added 10 points and four assists for the
Crusaders who drop to 2-7 on the season.
