AND BALLENGER LIFT BLUE HOSE TO 66-65 VICTORY OVER WARRIORS

College’s junior center Johann
Collins (Raleigh, NC) hit a free throw with :03
seconds remaining in the game to lift the Blue Hose to a 66-65
overtime win over the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University
in men’s college basketball action Monday night at the Ross
E. Templeton Center.
The Blue
Hose (8-4) fought back from a five-point deficit with 2:50
remaining in the game behind the play of junior forward Tray
Ballenger (Wellford, SC) who scored five points
including a game-tying dunk with :45 seconds remaining to
force overtime. In the extra period, sophomore forward Grant
Herren’s (Oviedo, FL) three-point play at the 2:45
mark gave PC a 65-62 lead. The Warriors (4-6) tied the game at
65 on a three-pointer by junior guard Josh Walker (Roebuck,
SC) at the 1:26 mark.
In the
first half, Southern Wesleyan broke open a tightly contested
game with a 8-2 run to pull ahead 10-5 on a jumper by senior
guard Brandon Allen (Laurens, SC) at the 14:26 mark.
The Blue Hose responded with a 22-10 run over the next nine
minutes highlighted by six points coming from Collins. PC
would extend their lead to as many as 10 points at 35-25 as
the game entered intermission. The Warriors were limited to
five points during the final seven minutes of the half.
In the
second half, Southern Wesleyan trailed by 12 points (42-30) at
the 16:39 mark before going on a 24-10 run over the next 11
minutes to retake the lead at 54-52 with 5:53 remaining on a
three-point field goal by senior guard Marshall Jenkins (Due
West, SC). The Warriors extended the lead to five points at
60-55 with 2:50 remaining before the Blue Hose began their
comeback
Collins led
three Blue Hose in double figures with 17 points, eight
rebounds, and an career-high six assists. Herren added 18
points and six boards while Ballenger posted a double-double
with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Southern
Wesleyan was led in scoring by Allen who tallied 17 points and
11 rebounds while Walker chipped in 14 points and three
steals. Junior forward Wendell Heyward (Johns Island,
SC) rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 points
coming off the bench.
