Herren Scores Career High In Victory Over L-R

CLINTON, S.C. – Grant Herren scored a career-high 25 points and Presbyterian College defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 75-72 in overtime in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Templeton Center.

The game was tied 65-65 at the end of regulation, but PC outscored the Bears 10-7 in the extra period to earn the victory.

Herren (Oviedo, Fla.) hit two free throws with 25 seconds left in overtime to put the Blue Hose ahead 75-72. Lenoir-Rhyne’s Marcus Springs had a chance to tie the game, but fell short on the game’s final shot to give the Blue Hose the win.

The victory moved the Blue Hose to within a half-game of the lead in the South Atlantic Conference. Lenoir-Rhyne came into the day with a game lead in the SAC, but its loss coupled with Catawba’s victory over second place Wingate helped PC inch closer to the league lead.

The Bears, who came entered the contest on an eight game winning streak, are now 8-2 in league play and 14-6 overall. Presbyterian improves to 7-3 in the conference and 14-8 overall.

Herren picked up the majority of his points from the charity stripe where he was 13-for-15.

In fact, the senior took well over half of PC’s free throws as the team shot 22 on the night, missing out on connecting on just four for a percentage of 82% as a team at the end of the game.

The free throw line was not the only strength for the Blue Hose in the contest. PC also was stout from beyond the arc, particularly in the second half where they shot 67%.

The Blue Hose finished the game shooting 55% from three-point range.

Drew Biggs (Alpharetta, Ga.) was the Blue Hose top marksmen on three-pointers. Biggs hit five of his seven attempts to conclude his day with a season-high 15 points.

Biggs was not the only one connecting. Pat Kiscaden (Oviedo, Fla.) hit four three-pointers to give PC nine of its 11 three-pointers from two individuals.

Lenoir-Rhyne was led by Marcus Springs and Reggie Bratton in the loss. Springs had 20 points and seven rebounds, while Bratton ended the day with a double-double showing of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Ranked 10th in the South Atlantic Region, Presbyterian next travels to Lincoln Memorial for the first time for a league contest. The Blue Hose and Railsplitters will play the second game of a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
