PC To Play Host To Newberry In Quarterfinals Of 2007 Food Lion SAC Tournament On Wednesday

ROCK HILL, SC. – Presbyterian’s men’s basketball team will begin the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament as the second seed and will play rival Newberry at home at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

The Blue Hose have defeated the Indians in both of their meetings this season. In the two games between the teams the Blue Hose outscored the Indians 130-72.

In their final meeting all-time last Wednesday at Elezear Arena, PC held the Indians to a season-low 29 points altogether in a 60-29 PC victory.

Ranked fifth in the South Atlantic region of the NCAA Division II rankings, Presbyterian ended the regular season 19-8 overall and 12-4 in league play.

Catawba, which won the South Atlantic Conference regular-season title for the second time in three years, is the top seed.

The Catawba Indians clinched the top seed with a 13-3 conference record.

The Indians, 18-9 overall, will open the tournament at home at 8 p.m. Wednesday against the winner of Monday’s first-round game between ninth seed Carson-Newman (2-14 SAC, 9-18 overall) and eighth-seed Mars Hill (4-12 SAC, 8-19 overall).

Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne finished tied for third place in the league standings with 11-5 records.

Wingate, the defending Food Lion SAC Tournament champions, earned the third seed by virtue of its regular-season win over top-seed Catawba.

The Bulldogs (11-5, 19-8) will host sixth-seed Tusculum at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Tusculum and Newberry finished tied with 6-10 conference records. The Pioneers earned the sixth seed by sweeping the regular-season series against Newberry.

The final pairing for the men’s bracket will be fourth seed Lenoir-Rhyne (11-5, 17-9) hosting fifth seed Lincoln Memorial (7-9, 13-14) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

The tournament kicks off on Monday with eighth-seed Mars Hill (4-12, 8-19) hosting ninth-seed Carson-Newman at 7 p.m.

Tickets for all tournament games are $6 per day for adults, $3 per day for children and for students and college students with valid ID.

The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs.
