Pirates Capture AASU/Southbridge Invitational
Blue Hose finish in seventh place after second round 299

SAVANNAH, Ga. –The No. 6-ranked Armstrong Atlantic men’s golf team played even with No. 20-ranked Barry and held off a hard-charging No. 20-ranked Columbus State team to capture the 2006 AASU/Southbridge Pirate Invitational by two strokes at Southbridge Golf Club in Savannah on Tuesday afternoon. Presbyterian shot a second round 299 to finish in seventh place.

The Pirates, who began the day just one stroke ahead of the Bucs, fired a final-round 297 on Tuesday for a two-day 587 total, 11-over-par and two strokes ahead of Barry. The Bucs fashioned a second-round 298 and finished the tournament with a 589 total, 13-over-par. The big mover on the day was Columbus State, who started the day 10 strokes back and fired a one-over-par 289 on Tuesday, but finished three strokes back in third with a 14-over-par 590 total. Coker (597, +21) and GC&SU (599, +23) rounded out the top five.

Individual honors came down to the final hole as Barry's Victor Billskoog held a two-stroke lead on AASU's Tripp Coggins heading into the final hole. Coggins reached the par-5 hole 18 in two, and left a tying eagle putt six inches short. Both players shot even-par 72 on Tuesday, giving the one-stroke win to Billskoog, who finished the tournament with a two-under-par 142 total. Coggins finished with a one-under-par 143 total, while Coker's Vincent Dunocel shot even par both days to finish in third place with a 144 total.

Presbyterian was led by sophomore Hugh Morrison who finished T-16th with a score of 149. Junior Patrick Townes was T-21st with a score of 150, while senior Jimi Brindell and junior Ben Karns finished T-26th with identical scores of 151. Sophomore Wes Herlong placed T-48th with a 157.

The Blue Hose return to action on March 6-7 at the Richard Rendleman Intercollegiate held at the Country Club of Salisbury in Salisbury, N.C.
