BLUE HOSE GOLFERS MORRISON, VARNER NAMED ALL-SAC SELECTIONS

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Hugh Morrison (Macon, Ga.) and Rob Varner (Columbus, Ga.) were both selected to the 2006 South Atlantic Conference All-Conference First Team, the league announced Friday.

Morrison, a sophomore from Stratford Academy, competed in five tournaments and posted three Top 10 finishes within the region.  He had a 75.92 stroke average, coming in tied for 12th (seventh regionally) at the Bobcat Invitational in Milledgeville, Ga., with a score of 222 following rounds of 82, 69, 71.  Morrison placed tied for 16th (tied for 10th regionally) at the Armstrong Atlantic State University/Southbridge Pirate Invitational in Savannah, Ga. after rounds of 74, 75 (149).

 

Varner, a freshman from Columbus HS, boasted a 75.60 stroke average through five tournaments.  He finished tied for 10th (first in the region) at the 2005 Pirate Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C., with a score of 219 (71, 74, 74).  Varner had a 16th-place finish (No. 1 in the region) at the Indian Bayou Collegiate Classic in Destin, Fla., after scoring rounds of 71, 78, 74 (223).

Lenoir-Rhyne College’s Kent George, who had three Top Three finishes in his freshman year of competition, swept the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Golf Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors.  Tusculum College head coach Bob Dibble was recognized as Men’s Golf Coach of the Year.  Dibble wins the award for the second time in his career.  He guided the Pioneers to five top-five tournament finishes, including a first place at the Tusculum Invitational.  Carson-Newman College’s Tyler Lane was presented the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Golf Scholar-Athlete Award.

The reigning Food Lion SAC Tournament Champions, the Blue Hose will have the opportunity to defend their title on April 10-11 at the 2006 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Golf Tournament at the Lake Hickory Country Club at Catawba Springs in Hickory, N.C., with 36 holes of competition on Monday. The final 18 holes will be Tuesday.
