KARNS SUCCESSFUL AT SCGA STATE
AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

AIKEN, S.C. – Presbyterian College’s Ben Karns finished tied for seventh at the 75th South Carolina Golf Association (SCGA) State Amateur Championship on Aug. 6.

The Gaffney, S.C. native carded rounds of 73, 72, five under par 65, and 73 for a four-day total of 283.  Karns, a rising senior at PC, was six behind the champion, Jeff Goff (Jackson, S.C.).  Goff claimed the SCGA championship with two under par rounds of 66 and 68 along with a four-day total of 277.  He came from three behind at the start of competition on Wednesday to win by three over Jordan Byrd (Pendleton, S.C.) and Phillip Mollica (Anderson, S.C.).

The 2006 SCGA Amateur Championship was played on the par 70, 6,713-yard Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C. and ran from Aug. 3-6.  The field consisted of 142 players and was cut to the low 70 and ties after the first two days of play.  The Amateur Championship is one of 17 major championships run by the SCGA, which is in its 75th year of existence.  The 2007 Amateur Championship will be conducted Aug. 2-5 at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.

Last season for the Blue Hose men’s golf team, Karns finished tied for 33rd at the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Southeast Regional after jumping 10 spots with a final round of 74.  He was PC’s sole representative at the regional.

The Blue Hose golf team will kick off the 2006-2007 season on Sept. 10-12 at the Kiawah Island Invitational, which be held at the par 72, 6,887-yard Cougar Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.
